I was wondering if a 1972 Corvette's tank sticker should have the VIN number on it. Thanks.

Re: VIN number on tank sticker in '72?
Michael & Edward,
I'm pretty certain the portrait style "tank sticker" Corvette Order Copy used from 67-72 did not have the VIN number on it. The VIN numbers first appeared on the build sheets when they changed to the "landscape style" in 1973. Another of the many "firsts" for the 73 vette.Jimmy

Re: VIN number on tank sticker in '72?
Most, 1972 Corvette sheets will show the vin. numbers typed in reverse, through the carbon paper, along with two key codes. Take notice I said most as there have been some found without these numbers.- Top

Re: VIN number on tank sticker in '72?
Michael,
I think I found a good example to show what the guys were saying about vin numbers appearing in reverse on this 72 tank sticker from one I was looking at online. Never thought those would be the vin#s, very interesting. The photo came out sideways but if you look mid page and down at the bottom right you can see numbers in reverse.Jimmy

OK, I guess the stuff that looked like gibberish and just shadows on the bottom 1/2 could actually be something on the first page bottom half of the one I am looking at then, just can't make it out, I will need to look at ten original. Thanks.Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New Mexico- Top

Re: VIN number on tank sticker in '72?
Another thing that I've noticed looking at these 72 build sheets (your sample photo too) is that most have the left corner torn or cut off. Why is thatAlso, I see what Kevin meant by most have the numbers in reverse. The vette dealer whose inventory I was looking at has three 72's with tank stickers and the others didn't have the vin numbers in reverse on them that I could see.

Re: VIN number on tank sticker in '72?
Good Morning Ralph,
I hope I'm not being a pain by asking these questions about your sales dept record, but I am very interested in this documentation stuff.
1. Would this have been stuck or placed in the car somewhere? (I don't see any signs of where it would have been glued, or torn away.)
2. How do you know it is a gatemans pass?
3.When in the process would the vin ( I'm assuming at the end) be finally placed on the front of the sales dept record (like yours) instead of either in reverse or not all like the examples above?
4. Are you the original owner/would that be the only way one of these #5's could be obtained?
Thanks again for sharing this documentation😊
Regards,Jimmy

Re: VIN number on tank sticker in '72?
These sheets were in the car on the floor or behind the seats when the car arrived at the dealer
Look at the lower part of the sheet and it says gatemans pass like I said in a previous post
I used to work at the dealer in the new car dept and I would collect these sheets for my paperwork collection
I did not own this car- Top

Re: VIN number on tank sticker in '72?
Thanks Ralph and kudos to you for having the foresight to collect and gather this historic documentation.
I guess in the early 70's this documentation(the one you asked Alan to post) held no value of importance to the original car owners so they wouldn't have wondered why this wasn't somewhere in their cars. Or for that matter, many or most had no idea of its existence.
This example then, (getting back to Michael's original post )with all the info shown would not have been stuck to the tank, correct?
I love this stuff
Since I'm relatively new to the NCRS is there any past "restorer" articles that go into all this in more detail? (Pre - 73) And more importantly how would I be able to obtain it?
thanks again!Jimmy
