    63 Z Bar parts

Are there any seals or washers on the engine side of the z bar? I checked the archives and found this in a response to a question about Z bar end play:

....the frame-side ball stud is retained in the shaft with two nylon ball seats and a spring retainer, and the end of the stud is secured tight to the frame bracket....

But it doesn't mention the engine side. My set up has never had anything on the engine side, but it occurred to me as I was reassembling it that perhaps something was missing.

The GM #3752863 stud on the engine side included a felt seal. Since it was part of the stud assembly, it is not shown in the AIM's. This felt seal deteriorates over time and "goes away without a trace". The seal was once available separately in SERVICE from GM under GM #3743355 but it's now discontinued. I expect that reproductions are available, though. It's a pretty simple part.

GM says that the 3752863 stud was used in PRODUCTION from 1963 through 1981. However, I think that at some point after 1965 the stud changed to GM #3866568. This is a similar stud but it uses a rubber seal instead of the felt seal. The rubber seal is much better and far more durable. The rubber seal was never available separately; you had to buy the stud to get it.

      Steve,

Here's a pic of the felt seals for both the inside and outside of the Z-bar. Didn't know they were discontinued but it's no surprise. Joe L. included the part numbers and you can see them on the package. You might check with GM and someone might have them in stock.

        Thanks. That makes more sense.

The GM #3743360 seal is used at the OUTER end of the cross shaft. It is still available from GM. The GM #3743355 is used on the INNER end. It is no longer available from GM.
