        Re: '63-'64 Steering Wheel

I'm planning on sending mine out for resto.
To remove my '63 wheel, should I take out the 6 screws beneath the horn button then the 3 screws for the horn contact? Or should I be removing the large bolt in the center? Simple I know but just want to be sure.

          Sydney,

Just remove the three screws holding the horn contact, then the 6 screws on the steering wheel hub.
          Comes right off!

If the six screws are correct, they are clutch head screws.

              Thanks for the help!
I spoke to Richard and was a bit confused after he mentioned that people send him the hub along with their wheel and he said to just remove the center bolt?
I'll go ahead and remove the horn contact and clutch head screws.

                Re: '63-'64 Steering Wheel

I will also be in need of a restored '63 wheel shortly - for an "early" car with the circular brush marks in the wheel's spokes.
I may buy a reproduction rather than restoring the one on mine currently - not only is the rim cracked and all the graining worn away - but the brush marks on the spokes are wrong, anyway (they are radial - and I know it's not the original wheel, anyway).

With that said.....my car is Daytona Blue with the Dark Blue interior - so dark it's almost black at first glance. When it is said the steering wheel is "color coordinated to the interior" does that mean the original wheel would have been Black or a Dark Blue? I only see Black, Red and Saddle wheels being sold, with one vendor making the comment "Blue no longer available". Would there have been a Dark Blue wheel? If so........sincethey don't appear to be available as reproductions, would/should I attempt to dye a black one?

                  Jason,

Yes, your steering wheel would have been dark blue to coordinate with your dark blue interior.

Any idea if it can be dyed....and last?
Or am I stuck with getting a black repro (or find a blue original, which would likely be stupid money).

                      Re: '63-'64 Steering Wheel

I took a black steering wheel and painted it dark blue a couple of years ago. The color holds up surprisingly well and when it starts to wear off the blue is so dark you can't see the black until a lot of the wheel is bare then repaint. The color passed judging at the regional.

Do you recall what brand or P/N of paint you used?
Do you know if the original wheels were painted, or molded-in-color?
A vendor told me today they thought the originals may have been black units painted to match (?)

                          Re: '63-'64 Steering Wheel

It was the dark blue interior paint and I got the paint from Corvette America. The 63 steering wheels are a solid color through and through. I had a saddle steering wheel refurbished by Gary's Steering Wheel Restoration several years ago. He did a very nice job on the plastic wheel and the stainless metal. He actually puts the grain on the wheel. If that is the direction you are looking to go in.

                            Re: '63-'64 Steering Wheel

The notes below were pulled from a add for the reproduction wheel. It appears they attempted to duplicate the spoke swirl pattern.
Would be interesting to see up close next to a low millage original.
                            Rick

                            * This was created using an NOS sample to exactly duplicate the grain that your 1963 Corvette steering wheel had when new
Red or Dark Blue are not available, you can paint a tan wheel to match
                            * Correct spoke finish (1963's had circular turning marks on the spokes until serial #18400. Radial turning marks running the length of the spoke were used after that.)
