For my own personal sanity I had to post this thread just see if anyone else has suffered through this mysterious dilemma. About three years ago I went out in my garage for something when I noticed all these bumps underneath the rear cover on my 86 coupe. I noticed little bits of glass on the floor and concluded that my glass was broken. Before removing the cover I first checked the cover for any damage from some type of projectile and found nothing. Nothing above the car had fallen
.My garage was not broken in to. This was summer in mid-June. My conversation with my glass installer who does this for a living with everyday passenger cars and corvettes and classic cars, told me that this happens with tempered glass. There could have been a flaw, or the glass could have slightly twisted maybe one or the other glass shocks moved causing stress, but this is common with tempered glass. My insurance paid for everything no questions asked, but trying to find a NOS heated glass for the car was impossible, settled for NOS unheated and sold the car that fall. Everyone that I've spoken to or showed a picture of the car to, never heard of such a thing.
Now this brings me to yesterday's mystery. I go out in my garage open my garage door and what do I find but my wife's 2002 Buick Regal GS's rear window is shattered.
I couldn't believe my eyes, "this could not be happening again" Once again, no projectiles, nothing fell from above, no known intruders. Same reason provided by my glass installer, was that this happens with tempered glass. My response to him was "how can I be so unlucky to have this happen twice?"
Once again insurance is covering everything. My wife and this Buick traveled back and forth to Pittsburgh (50miles north of me) everyday for over 15 years. The car has over 260,000 miles on it, and now the tempered glass decides to have a flaw? BTW this rear glass is no longer available, new or from GM. Had to settle for a used one or tape clear plastic over the back of the car
. I asked if temperature changes could be the cause because my garage is not climate controlled, but he said that's possible, but not necessarily the case. There are people who leave vehicles outside in all types of extreme weather conditions and this never happens. this is driving me nuts. sorry for the long post, but just wondered if this has happened to anyone else, or am I the lucky one?
Maybe my garage is haunted!
thanks for listening,
