    63/64 radios

I'm told the late 63 (AM/FM) and 64 radios are different from all the other midyears. How so ?
If I stick a working 65 radio in my dash will judges detect a difference ?

Is it because the earlier radios have the old Conelrad civil defense symbol on the AM dial ? Or what ?

I believe the differences were internal components, even the 63 and 64 are different.

Looking at the paper ID tags:

63 id's started at 86 FMA 0001. Radio 86 FMA 0006 was on car 11768 ans 86 FMA 1594 was on car 13356. So somewhere around car 11750 AM/FM radios started being installed.

    64 id's started at 21 FJA 0001 to 21 FJA 9999 then 21 FJB 0001, etc

    65 id's started at 81 FSA 0001 to 81 FSA 9999 then 81 FSB 0001, etc.... through 67. 81 FSJ 2206 was on 67 17344

AM/FM dial frequency colors did change in 65.

Also, the AM tuning screw went from the side under the radio side panel to under one of the front knobs.

I believe the 63 64 radio has a red indicator for FM and the 65 has a different color. When I had my 63 radio repaired the mechanic told me the 63 radio was the worst of the midyears from a technology standpoint. The FM components were an old design and did not work well. That was greatly improved by 65.

          Frank,

Just change the dial to the Conelrad script and replace the lens with the earlier 63-64 and no judge can tell the difference unless they remove the side panels. And they are not allowed to touch your Corvette. The internal electronics of the 65 and up radio are completely different from the 63-64 AM/FM. Much improved with additional AM and FM amplifiers stages.

Just looking at options prior to Lakeland - my AM went out on my original radio as I just found out a couple of days ago...
