1969 coupe with "67" in the VIN?

    All:

Somebody recently asked me about their 1969 Corvette T-Top (coupe) with "67" as the fourth and fifth digits in the VIN. One would expect a "37" on a coupe.

Did this sort of inconsistency occur in 1969? Has anybody seen it before? It's a later build, 3XXX approximately.

I once saw that kind of inconsistency on a 1974.

It is the old story: "Give enough monkeys typewriters (one would have to use computers now days) and one of them will type Shakespeare."

        Paul------

In a case like this, I would definitely want to make sure that the last 5 digits of the VIN tag match the last 5 digits of the VIN derivative found stamped on the frame. If they match, then the VIN tag's "67" is a factory mistake. If they don't match, then the car is a stolen car that was "cleansed" by installing the VIN tag from a car with a clean title.

Joe Lucia: Good point about the frame VIN tag, I'll ask the owner.

He could also look at the transmission and engine number to see if they match each other and the VIN sequence.

We can also look at the manufactured date as stated on the trim tag and compare it to the VIN / birthday result given by the Corvette Birthday Calculator iPhone app although I'm not sure about its accuracy.

My understanding is that these details sometimes got confused on the production line in 1969 and other C3 years?

One other method to check both build date and vin number is to order a Shipping Data Report. Unfortunately for late cars (over approx. 30000) the information is missing from the files.
