    63 fuel line shield

The 63 fuel line from the tank is wrapped with a spring-like wire shield (loom?) as it leaves the frame kick-up hole. Anyone know what the intended purpose of this is? To shield the line from contact with the body? Protect it against debris from the rear wheel? Both? Neither? Decoration?

    Thanks
    Mike

    Michael,

Always considered that a "rock guard" or as you have said a "debris shield". There have been a few questions about the black woven material that goes inside the frame by the muffler. I believe the poll considered that a heat shield keeping the gas line cool as the temp of the muffler rises as we are driving on the track! Yeah, for sure on the track!

Joe, thanks, I'm leaning toward the "rock" guard explanation, too, as there are a lot of other places where the line is very close to the body...

I believe the "woven" loom material you spoke of is there to protect the fuel line from the edge of a steel gusset inside the frame, as the tube passes through a slotted hole in that gusset... The line is not clamped inside that rail and is free to move for some distance inside that rail, so it might rattle against that edge if they used the spring loom. The dimension given in the AIM locates it right on the gusset...

It's called "armor" in auto industry lexicon and is placed over fuel pipes in areas that are vulnerable to rock/debris kicked up from the tires in order to protect the pipe from damage.

As well as, abrasion from the frame hole that the line passes thru.

            Michael,

Where the gas line passes thru the frame above the "armor" there is a plastic grommet. It can be obtained from any of the box warehouses that sell Corvette parts.

              Re: 63 fuel line shield

Joe, This car has electronic fuel injection now, so I've got two fuel lines going through the frame and can't use the grommet. I'm making a new grommet to keep the lines separate and protect them from the edge of the hole. I have to figure out a new shield to replace the wire wrap, as two thicknesses of wrap will push the tubes into the body...

              Thanks,
              Mike
