I just got home mounting my goodyears on my original 65 steel wheels. I installed 1 and 3/8 inch valve stems per the judging guide. Trying the original stamped hubcaps I see that the valve stem cap does not protrude out of the hub cap. Actually it's about a 1/2 inch short of sticking out to the cap. On the judging guide it says the valve stem should protrude out of the hub cap. What I'm I missing? I don't think I can have it both ways... Thanks Tim

Re: 65 valve stem problem
IIRC, the ones I used on my 65 were 2". Using that length, only the valve cap is sticking out of the hubcap. 1 3/8" would definitely be too short. The current 65 JG is full of incorrect info. Hopefully the new one will correct at least some of the mistakes.- Top

Re: 65 valve stem problem
Thanks Jim, My tire guy is really going to love me 😕 . After driving him nuts with weights on the inside only , 1 3/8 " valve stems and having him set the wheels on blankets so he didn't scratch them, now I get to go in and tell him to change the valve stems to 2" . Oh boy, I better practice my approach. Wish me luck and thanks again. Tim- Top

Re: 65 valve stem problem
Thanks, looking at the restoration book V2 , it shows a 65 wheel with stem. Hard to tell exactly but looks around 2+ inches . Tire guy has a 2 or 2 1/8" valve stem in stock, depending on where I measure it . Looks like it's another trip with donuts and coffee in my hands.....thanks I'm going with the longer valve . Tim- Top

Re: 65 valve stem problem
Here's a long valve stem on a 15 x 5_1/2 JK rim, dated 3_65. If you lay a tape measure from the surface (base) of the rim to the tip of the brass threads, I believe I measured 2.0" Of course the cap adds about 1/8". Don't even know if the tire supply industry makes a 2_1/8". Auto parts store stocks as industry standard "TR-418", IIRC, and this is code is also on the mushroom (inside) base of the valve.
The coming 6th ed. of the '65 TIM&JG will probably correct this for steel wheels. For knock-offs, there's a shorter stem.

Re: 65 valve stem problem
Wayne, thank you . I just measured a TR-478 and it looks like the way to go. It is exactly 2" without valve cap to to upper grove on the base of the valve. My new best friend tire guy has them in stock. Next I might try to find some oz weights without the mm on them. Probably a difficult item to find based on lead prices. Thanks again for the help. Re: 65 valve stem problem
Tim,
Try Kevin Goodman (43429) for the weights . He had a bunch a while back.
