1968 PO1 caps the real deal?

I came across a hubcap, and I am puzzled about the PO1 vs PO2 again, or more correctly what is a correct PO1 cap. The early 1968 cars could have the optional PO1 cap and then, at some point, Merlin changed it to the PO2.

Until now it was my understanding that the only differences were in the Turbine of the cap. The cap was the same 15 inch one, and it's ornament was the same, araised version of the flat one seen on the Chevrolet.

The turbine on the PO1 had a larger diameter top which left a slight reveal ofabout a 1/8" or so around the base of the ornament, this design requiredthe fins of the turbine to terminate to a point. The PO2 cap's fins terminate squared off to the smaller top and meet the ornament flush.

Also, the fin on the PO1 is much shorter at the valve stem then that of the PO2. Ihave attached pictures of a PO1 cap that I acquired many years ago from anoriginal 1968 owner. They show the raised ornament, the pointed fins and the shortened fin at the valve hole.

My dilemma comes from this cap with a mid rise ornament. It is not flat like the Chevrolet, and not fully extended like the PO2, but with the same turbine characteristics. Please see attached pictures of the three caps. My PO1, thePO2 which we all know, and this other cap. Due to restrictions of posting photos, I will post the ornaments and the shortened stems and the pointed fins. Ken

The last of you're photos shows the fin and ornament assembly that comes with a 14 inch Camaro, Nova, Chevelle wheelcover.

Ken, it is always good to receive more distinguishing info on the '68 PO-1 hubcap. For years, I thought the only characteristics that were different from a PO-1 and 2 were the fins coming to a point at the hub and the 1/8 reveal on the hub base. I went out tonight and checked my PO-1's and sure enough, there is the shorter fin at the valve hole. Thanks for posting!

My PO2s also have a short fin at the valve hole.

I have a set of PO2s that are original to my 73 that have the short fin at the V stem but I also have one that is exactly the same as far as I can tell except it does not have a shorter fin at the V/S. Can any one enlighten me on this one?

Believe these are early '68 MY, taken downtown Montreal. Probably can't detect the detail being currently discussed, though. Gives me an excuse to post a photo of Donna .

If Ken's first pic is of a PO1 with the fins fading out at the center of the hub cap, then these pics on the 68 must be PO2s as the fins end abruptly up against a lip. The originals that came from the factory on my 73 end abruptly like the ones on this 68.

I posted on this some time ago and showed pictures of the difference including the difference in the inside, I will try and find them.
