    Dash wiring Question

I am in the process of reinstalling my dash and cluster.

I owe John Hinckley a drink for his great article on the subject, and somebody else one for this great labeled picture ! (see photo #1 below)

Now I have three questions before I start .

    (1) Where do the two additional wires , one orange and one white , that are not shown in the labeled picture, but are present and exiting out of the ignition side of my dash harness, go to ( see photo #2)

    (2) Besides John's great article , I remember reading somewhere that connecting the cluster prior to installing the dash made life much easier. I can see how it would. Does any one have any hints or suggestions or tricks on how that would work ?

    (3) I'm just spitballing here , but would installing the windshield be easier and or advisable before installing the dash ?

    Re: Dash wiring Question

    Jim,

1-The Org and White go to the Stop Light Switch.

2- I've attached all wires to the cluster before installation and I feel it's much easier. I use long 1/4" x 20 bolts threaded into the 5 cluster U-Clips and just slide the cluster in and route the fuse panel and wiring into their positions.

3- I'll defer that one to others more experienced in that task.

            Richard ,

Thanks for the info on the two wires.

As for the cluster , your way would have been the easiest way of all ! I have however already routed the harness and attached the fuse panel and a few other things , so it going to be a little more restrictive . I still can however hook it all up before I install the dash which gives me a lot of wiggle room . Any hints on how to leave the cluster hanging before installing it in the dash , or did you just wire it on your lap and install it all at the same time ?

              Thanks Jim ,

I kind of thought that would be easier that way, but needed to know if there was any downside to it .

instead of using long bolts, i cut a couple pieces of all thread(about 2 oe 3" long), thread them into the nuts of the dash, then slide the cluster over the all thread. the use of bolts requires holding cluster with one hand while threading the bolt into the dash. using all thread, put them in the dash first, then you have two hands to lift the cluster onto the all thread. mike

Yes all thread certainly works and I agree a bit easier to place the cluster in position.

I've actually been meaning to cut the heads off of my "cluster bolts" for some time now but just haven't gotten around to it. I may leave one intact with the head to keep the cluster from falling rearward, but unlikely with the harness weight in the forward direction.

Jim, Here are some photos of the last one I did. The cluster & harness assembly is buried in this post about 1/2 way down.

No Sir , Thank you !

The only way you could have made it easier is if you wired it for me !

Now if I could just get someone else to reprint the entire AIM in color , adding more pictures and way more legible notes , I might be able to finish this car !

                        Interested ?
