1968 AC Compressor - Correct Part Number ??

I just made contact with a guy who wants to sell me his original AC compressor and "muffler" off of an early '68 car. Can anybody give me the correct part number I should be looking for on the foil label ?? I do not have a AIM or JM for a '68 and I want to make sure they are the originals. Also included in the sale is an original jack and handle from the same early '68, looks to be in pretty good shape.

If someone could help me out with a P/N, I will gladly make these items available at a reasonable price to someone in need. I just want to make sure they are originals and the don't end up in the land fill !!

    Thanks,
    John

Here is a pic of a friends 68 coupe. The top number is different. Maybe one of the experts can chime in. image.jpg

        Jeff,
That top number is a date code. I believe it is mm/dd/y/shift. Yours appears to be may 23, '68 first shift. The second looks like Jan. 20, '68 first shift. The part number (645) was used into early '69 MY. Someone else might chime in with a correction if I am wrong.

          You have it right Jeff.

Funny, that is exactly what the TIM&JG says.

Thanks, Jeff. I'm still looking for an exact replacement. With someone to type in date. Let me know if you have a reference. I found 1 company but it doesn't have that 645 stamp on the bottom.

The compressor was probably not exclusive to corvettes. Say that, look at camero, chevelle, impala, all chevrolet compressors. I just did an ebay search on (1968 chevrolet compressor) and over 700 appeared.

Re: 1968 AC Compressor - Correct Part Number ??

Hey guys, thanks for the info. The compressor turned out to be a bust. Red/black label, Model number 5910793, dated Oct, 3rd 1972. It must have been replaced at some point in it's life. Turns out the jack is a real '68, dated 8C, March '68, certainly not as early as originally described to me but still a good one. The last item I have my fingers crossed on is the muffler. Still attached to the compressor and out of the car. I believe I have the right P/N. Hopefully I can identify if it's still from '68 or did it get replaced with the '72 compressor.

Thanks again for the info and have a Happy Thanksgiving !!

Paragon has compressor labels with that part number that are really good- I don't know if they are exact- which are blank in the date code area. You need to find someone who has a typewriter with the font that matches. Then carefully type the date code in the space.

You mentioned the muffler. Is this what it looks like ? I bought this one NOS (GM) dealer in the '80s, and the parts book showed factory installation for 1968 Corvettes, and to service the earlier years (part #3923139), Gr 9.226.

Wayne - thanks for the pics of the muffler, here is the one shot that I have. Photo quality is a bit rough, but it certainly looks the same to me. What do you think ??

Now the question is condition, obviously is bolted to the '72 SP compressor, off the car and uncapped for ??? length of time. Is it any good ?? Can it be cleaned out/rebuilt ??

                        Thanks,

There is nothing inside the muffler, so a good cleaning with a solvent designed for AC systems is all you need to do before placing it under vacuum.

Lots of AC system flushing products on-line. Here is just a small sample:

Thanks for the info Terry. I'm going to ask for a few more close up pictures of the muffler and see if I can get it and the jack purchased at a reasonable price !!

Thanks again to all who submitted the needed information.

The seller and I have come to terms on the '68 jack, handle and spring along with the AC muffler. I'll know more about condition and be able to take some better pics when the parts arrive. Thanks again for all of the support determining if they were original or not.

So now on to the fun part, since I don't own a '68, I will be looking for a good home for this stuff. Send me a PM if you're interested and I'll also post them in the Parts for Sale section when they get here.

                              Thanks,
