    Shifter Removal

I'm getting ready to pull the stock 4 speed shifter on my 68. I have a number of shop manuals and the AIM. All the manuals describe dropping the shifter out the bottom. My question is should the exhaust be removed to make room? Any advice would be appreciated.

    Re: Shifter Removal

It can be removed without dropping the exhaust pipes. However, you will need to remove the exhaust pipe bracket near the cross member that holds the pipes up. This will also require removing the rear trans mount bracket, supporting the trans, removing the shifter bracket that attaches to the frame cross member, disconnecting the reverse lock out cable and the back up light switch. Getting to the some of the bolts, cotter pins and mickey mouse clips can be frustrating, but it can be done.
