1956 to 1962 Heater Blower Motor Seized - How to Repair

Edit.... PDF of the process HERE

A few days ago a thread began regarding oiling these motors. The front (drive) shaft is easily accessible from the outside, but not the rear. Typically the rear shaft gets seized to the bronze oil-lite bushing. Gene Mano gave me a idea after he repaired a C2 motor years ago and was successful. So deciding a needed a new challenge, I took this old motor out of the box that my friend gave me and gave it a try. I think I'll pass it back to him for fun.

Below is a link to the complete photo group of the seized 1956 blower motor which I disassembled, dissected, and repaired. Some day I will provide a full description of the process, but the photos are sequential and describe the process I used in pictures.

In short, I cut the 6 spot welds from the bushing retainer and after refurbishment I used epoxy to retain it.

    The motor now works perfectly.

Comments, critiques, feedback and suggestions welcomed.

Edit.... I've added ALL of the photos for reference here due to Photobucket disappearance. There are many, as usual.

      Rich,

Is the fan just pressed on the shaft? I have two, one a bit rougher than the other but didn't want to get over aggressive and damage something.

Eric, Yes it's just pushed on and a push-nut holds it on.

Whatever you do, do not use excessive heat. The potmetal cage housing will melt.

I've found the best is to use Freeze-Off on the shaft to shrink it then hold the cage and try tapping the shaft down with a brass hammer. If it starts to move you'll be good. Just repeat until it's off.

Dave Zuberer created a pdf file of my process with a tutorial that he put together for me. He used my photos and did a nice write-up.

We're reviewing it and will post it here some time later when done.

Francis, Dave and I emailed several times. He did it and emailed to me.

He did a super job taking my pictures and a few 2-way email conversations and wrapped it up the other day. It came out very nice. It's 15 pages total. We may make a few revisions later.

I want to say a special thanks to Dave for this fine effort all that he does for us all. Thanks Dave !!

It's nearly 1.5 MB but it fits as a attachment here. See below and click to download. Comcast destroyed my website in October(intentional "PERK" removal), so I can't put it there to download for the non-NCRS members with Corvette interest. I have to get a new ISP and upoad my saved website someday but no time right now. It'll take me a day or so to get it the way I want it.

Any and all feedback always welcome.

Keith, I think by measuring the originals you may be able to get them from a local auto electric repair shop. They have access to many suppliers. Since these motors are reproduced, someone must have them.

                          Hi Richard:

Wow, that is a really nice rebuild job and should be turned into an article for the Restorer. Rebuilding the original motor is highly desirable if the part number and date code are visible to the judges.

If the only issue is squeaky bearings, there is an alternate (and less thorough) procedure that I have used with good success. As you note, the bearings are made from Oil-Lite material that is sort of a porous bronze. The large, externally raised area surrounding each bearing is a felt washer that was saturated with oil when the motor was built. This felt washer is visible in some of your photos. The felt washer keeps the bearing supplied with oil for many years.

Over time, the washer dries out and the bearing loses its source of oil. If the felt washer could somehow have its oil supply replenished without opening up the motor, the bearing usually quiets down and works fine.

To re-saturate the felt washer with oil, I simply drill a very small hole in the raised area that holds the felt washer, and then carefully inject some oil through the hole into the washer. Then I clean the hole and fill it with some epoxy or JB Weld.

This is sort of a "Bubba" fix that addresses the immediate problem of dried out bearings, but does not address other possible problems with worn out brushes or armature failures. However, in my limited experience with old blower motors, the number one problem is dried out bearings.

Excellent write up Rich and the usual nice presentation from Dave Z.

I have done a few of these and as you mention, the front side is easily serviced (sometimes that is the only side stuck). The last one I worked on had that problem, and by polishing the shaft before trying to remove it from the stuck bushing and some penetrating oil and careful slow movement, I was able to free it. It was so badly stuck it spun the bearing and wallowed out the end hole in the case. Made a terrible noise when it ran. Smooth as silk now. Like you, I enjoy these type of small bench component projects and it is very gratifying to save an original part and reinstall when possible.

Again, great write up, thanks for posting. Dan
