Vote for black, my 64 was never rebuilt (owned since 67 and know past history) and still has the "I" dated diodes (oh you say no such letter was used - it was on mine) Last year I inspected a 69 that was black and has been in the cellar since 1970. In both cases there was not much left of the black, mostly that optional rust color. Agree it's not the caramel stuff used on the stator.
