1963 Corvette Technical Service Bulletin #610 for the spare tire lock

I'm trying to understand the dates given in TSB #610, which deals with spare tire lock corrosion and the change from the use of the anti-rattle pad to the rubber boot. I found TSB #610 on the CorvetteActionCenter.com website. The information provided there gives a date of the bulletin of July 22, 1963, but in the text of the bulletin it says "Beginning with the March 15, 1963 production the protective boot Part No. 3841701 will be installed to prevent corroding of the lock." What does the July 22 date in the bulletin header mean? I'm asking because I've been talking with someone who has a '63 Bowtie car with a build date of mid-June and his spare tire lock has the anti-rattle pad, not the rubber boot. If his tire lock is original to the car, and he believes that to be the case, then does that mean the intent to replace the anti-rattle pads in production as of March 15, 1963 did not happen?

    Thanks,

    Gary

No. WTF can this system NOT handle a "NO" reply?

      Loren,

Am I correct in understanding that you're saying that if GM has thousands of spare tire locks with the anti-rattle pad in inventory on March 14, that those locks would be discarded and locks without the anti-rattle pad and with the rubber boot would be used exclusively from March 15 onward?

In which case it would be simple to stop gluing on pads and starting adding the boot. So no large inventory of locks with glued-on pads. And therefore easy to affect a quick change. Yes?

The answer may be that the June 63 car spare tire lock is not typical on the entire run but that's not to say that's its wrong. Can't we be more realistic here and think about an assembly line and how it's stacked with parts???

Guess judging is a waste of time with that logic.....anything is possible at anytime.

My understanding on the pad is apparently the same as BJ's (see #2). I would interpret the months-later notice being used to notify all dealers that this is the date that St Louis made the change. #10706 is a March car and when I bought it in 1972, the rubber was on the lock, even though it was found with the jack.

While the 1963 CORVETTE ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTION MANUAL copy I have in the AIM reprinted by Mid American Corvette Supplies might just add more questions than answers, SECT. 10/SHEET 4.00 SPARE WHEEL LOCK shows the p/n 3832480 LOCK UNIT & p/n 3841701 COVER. The REVISION RECORD of the DRAWING SHEET 4.00 shows that the original p/n 3794104 LOCK & CYLINDER UNIT ASM was changed to p/n 3832480 LOCK UNIT on 8-29-62 & that the p/n 3841701 COVER was ADDED on 1-15-63. In addition, the p/n 3794106 INSULATION & p/n 3686625 CEMENT were REMOVED. Interesting information. Pete
