The casting was off center in the sense that the grooves that slide over the piece in the door were not equal and were not the same dimension as the original. There is one on eBay now that looks better from the pictures. The one I bought had rounded corners where the original had square corners in the slots. Also the slots were shorter on the new one. In addition the boss that has the screw hole in it was thicker and contributing to the non seating.

Perhaps the source for these at GM has changed.

It could be that the tooling was pretty well worn out by the time that the GM examples you got were actually manufactured.
