    Uhaul Car Trailer

In the past I have rented a dovetail trailer from an independent but sadly their trailer is broken and not available this weekend. I called around other independents and was not able to find anything more suitable. That pretty much leaves me with Uhaul which as a consolation is at least much cheaper. I need to carry a 72 chassis (body off, just a frame, 4 wheels, motor and transmission). And I need to load and unload it from flat ground. Anybody done this with Uhaul equipment and can confirm if it will not drag on the top of the ramps (assuming most Uhaul car haulers are pretty much the same)?

    Phil,
I have used the Uhaul trailer for my 70 a few times and it worked fine. Underside of car did not contact top of ramps.

Thanks. Without the body, the chassis sits even higher so now I feel more comfortable renting the Uhaul.

        Re: Uhaul Car Trailer

A few years ago we brought my son in laws '78 home on a U-Haul. Towed it 300 miles with an F-250 and it towed really well. We had no problem loading it. I remember that we put a couple of short pieces of 2x6 flat under the front wheels to raise the front of the car because we were not comfortable with the clearance between the lower part of the body where it overhung the front of the trailer. You will probably not have that problem since the body is off but I thought I would mention it so you would know to check.

No problem. I liked the front wheel tie downs when we hauled wifey's '63 300HP PG coupe from VA to FL back in '07.

That U-Haul looks nicer and more sturdy than I thought it would.

The U-Haul trailers are a great design and only $50 a day. Unless you use a trailer all the time, it doesn't make sense to own one.

Wow. That's as much as the daily rate for a rental car. I wonder if I can just rent a flat-bed tow truck? I don't need (or want) the driver.

                  Re: Uhaul Car Trailer

I doubt you'll find any flat beds for rent. Been there. $50 is a absolute bargain for a trailer..................

But be ready for a surprise depending on the route. When we went to VA to look at that Silver Blue '63 with the wife and our 2 Spaniels in the back seat of my pickup, I was offered to use a friend's trailer. I wasn't sure if we were going to buy the car so I thankfully declined. Didn't want to haul it for no definite reason and wear out his tires and bearings. When we got there and decided to buy it, I checked online that night from the hotel with U-Haul for a rate. It was $200.

It was December. Early next morning we went to the U-Haul store to get the trailer. But mistakenly, I did the FL to VA route for the estimate, NOT the VA to FL route. I figured same cost the night before. Just a slip of the buttons online.

Since the northerners were in the migration to go to warmer climates, from North to South the rate nearly tripled. He tells me the cost. It was $700 to rent that trailer, 3 days minimum!! I was so mad at myself for not borrowing my buddies trailer. Now I HAD to rent it. Made the wife happy, she got her dream '63 PG coupe so that's all that counts. I found ways to use that trailer for 3 days back in FL to get a little satisfaction from getting price gouged.

In the end it was all worth it.

Tell me it was $700 total, not per day.

one way UHaul rents are pricey, but daily from your local UHaul store is cheap. Mine came to around $65 with fees for 24 hour period. Made a 250 mile round trip run to get my whitey 64 fuelie coupe. As Jim D. says, it does not pay to own and store your own open car trailer unless you use it a lot.

ps. I particularly like the front tires ratchet strap hold down system on the UHaul trailer. Strap your car down in about 90 seconds.

Duh, just looked up and see Rich M covered the super slick strap system above....early mid year coupes are right at home on UHaul trailers!

Like Don said, $50 a day is the price IF you return it to the same place you rent it from. 1 way rental prices are ridiculous and that applies to cars as well. If I'm serious about a car, I rent the trailer locally and take it with me in case I buy it. That way there's no last minute scrambling and being held hostage by the rental place. If I don't buy the car, I'm only out $50.

                            Re: Uhaul Car Trailer

U-Haul rentals are always going to be more expensive if you return a one way to an area that has a glut. If you can return the rental to a neighboring location that doesn't have as much pressure, sometimes you can get a lesser rate. You have to ask. Occasionally you can get a discount if you are lucky enough to be traveling to an area that has a deficit. Occasionally you can get a better price by walking in to a local dealer rather than going on line or calling. Calls are not always answered by the local dealer. They are sometimes intercepted by a national call line (even when calling a local number). The best price is going to be a local rental. There is no charge for mileage and no way to indicate how far the trailer has traveled. You could go from San Francisco to New York and back and the charge would be the same if you traveled ten miles. It's based on a day rate but you need to return it to the store you rented it from.
The U-Haul car trailers are definitely stout. The only issue may be door to fender clearance. The new trailers were supposed to get a drop down fender. Whether they got them or not I don't know. It's been about five years since I've used one. The drop down fender may not have panned out as a design feature.

                              Re: Uhaul Car Trailer

I rented a U-Haul trailer and hauled a '63 SWC 250 miles. The trailer worked flawlessly. Only the driver's side fender swung down to allow the driver's door to open. That could present a problem when crossing the border, and the customs agent wants to see the VIN plate.

Cost was about $60 for 24 hours. Different rental locations have different hours, so choose the one that has the best hours for you.
