The GM additive is still around..........just bought some a few weeks ago. The original posi additive containing whales oil ended with the environmental, animal protection, and "hippy" movements in the 1960's

Re: Posi additive for Mid Year

The old Positraction additive along with the old Type A Suffix A ATF did contain whale oil, but whale oil products were outlawed in the USA back in the seventies, so industry had to come up with a substitute. They did in the form of a synthetic chemical that actually is much longer lived than whale oil, which, like any animal product, degrades rapidly with increasing temperature.

All OEMs that offer clutch-type LSDs sell the same product. You can also buy it from NAPA for a lot lower price. I have the p/n somewhere in my notes, but don't have the time to search right now. Try searching the napaonline.com or call a NAPA dealer and if you get a sharp guy he might know what you are talking about.

I had no idea whale oil used to be an ingredient in LSD additive. I'm glad they stopped that practice.Mark Edmondson

 Re: Positraction additive

I guess no one got it when I offered my little pun. Guess I'm dating myself, but it used to be said that the additive came from sperm whales and it was a common pun to transpose the two words leaving some commandos to believe the transposed verbiage to actually be the source. Am I the only one who remembers this? I used to wonder how they got it.

 Re: Positraction additive

Do you get a discount from "list price"? Dealers usually charge list price to walk-in customers off the street that don't have an account or a discount arrangement, and some GM dealers are known to mark up the list price by 10-30 percent for walk-ins.

 Re: Positraction additive

Neither did I until about 20 years ago. The OE spec for the transmission oil in my '88 MBZ 190E 2.6 five-speed is ATF Type A Suffix A, which I knew was a long obsolete specification. So I talked to the service manager at the dealer... telling him that the Mercedes spec was obsolete and would the current Dexron be suitable. He responded that the old Type A Suffix A had a whale oil additive and that's what the factory required. I thought he was crazy.

So I did more research, and sure enough the "friction modifier" in the old original GM Type A Suffix A ATF formulation and the Positraction additive contains some whale oil, which prevents wet clutch chatter.

I thought about writing a letter to MB USA criticizing them for specing a transmission oil that was no longer available because it contained an additive that was made illegal to sell in the USA nearly 20 years prior, but decided not to waste my time with some "customer service" moron.

I replaced the transmission oil with Redline MTL.
