    Larry -

Totally different process - alternators were "roll-stamped" in an automated machine - neither the alternator case half nor the tool in the roll-stamp machine was free to "bounce".

OK, good explanation. Thanks guys. I continue to learn, even as an old dog.

NCRS Convention in 92 took a tour of the Flint engine plant. We saw corvette blocks being stamped on the line. He even grounded out a stamp and restamped a block when someone asked what he did with a mistake. flint0090.jpg

And in the blue cabinet he had the air driven rotary grinder with the carbide burr on it. I bet that thing was two feet long and had a 3/4-inch air hose on it. He just whaled away on that pad until there was nothing left of the stamp or the broach marks and then he hit it three or four times with the hammer and stamp. I hope that engine went into a truck because no one would believe how messed up it was when he got done showing off to us. I guess he made his point because we remember it 23 years later.
