I recently changed the oil and filter (PF-141) in my 67 L71. I put in six quarts of oil, ran it to check for leals, and checked the level. The dipstick is showing, what looks like one qt. over full. I thought I had the original. Can anyone describe the marking on the OEM di[stick? Better yet post a photo. What should it measure from the tip to the tube collar? Thanks in advance.

The correct dipstick should measure 17-13/32" from the seat to the "full" mark and 18-1/2" from the seat to the "add" mark.
Now, the question arises as to where exactly is the "seat". It is obscured by the "bell". You can determine this by inserting the dipstick into the tube AS FAR AS IT WILL GO and marking that point on the "bell". You should find that the seat is very near the top of the bell.
The correct dipstick should have a "salmon" colored plastic plug on the handle. However, a dipstick with a white plug should measure accurately. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Original 67 BB dipstick
Mine is identical to the above photos and measures exactly as Joe Lucia said. Doesn't make any sense. I am going to ask the shop to verify the filter they put in the canister.- Top

Re: Original 67 BB dipstick
Do you know for sure that the dip stick tube is correct? The length of that tube determines how far the dip stick protrudes into the pan.
Was the car "level" or "nose up" when you drained the oil? Do you have the correct pan?
Your initial post indicated that you changed the oil and filter. Your latest post said you were going to ask the shop about the oil filter they installed. Are you sure about the quantity of oil installed (assuming the shop installed the oil and filter)Last edited by Stephen L.; October 7, 2015, 06:49 PM.- Top

[QUOTE=Donald Anderson (11172);756452]Hi Ara, some better handle pics...
Update: Had some help from members (thanks Ara) clarifying various dipstick types. The one I posted earlier has the "pinched" handle otherwise is identical. I found a correct one nearby and these are photos to clarify what I have now for my L71

Re: Original 67 BB dipstick
Well, I found and bought a 67 BB dipstick that was used. I paid quite a bit for it. Just put it in the car and it is reading at the full mark as it should. I don't get it. The stick I had was a repro from Paraggo, It is exactly the same length as the original and has the same markings, but not in the correct position on the shaft, hence it reads a qt. over full. Why can't the repro manufacturers get it right and just copy an original?- Top

I believe it's 13-3/4" DEVELOPED length as measured from the flange (where it seats on the oil pan tube) to the very top end. "Developed length" is the total length of the tube as measured over the curvature of the tube. Use masking tape from the flange to the end. Then, remove the tape, place the tape on a flat surface and measure.
However, I'm not 100% sure about the above dimension. So, wait until someone else confirms based on measurement of a known-original tube.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
