    67 Fuel Pump Question

    HI:

This is a bit of a goofy question but ---

When the engines (small block) were painted orange ---the fuel pump was clearly not on the engine correct? Was the opening masked off and were the regular bolts used to hold the mask on? -- or some other arrangement? I ask because I noticed orange paint on the fuel pump bolts on my 67 (restored by the previous owner) --- I am not sure if that is correct or not.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

    Regards
    Bill

They don't look the correct bolts. Are they?

The paint is definitely not typical production ... As for the bolts not sure as the pic is not clear

        Re: 67 Fuel Pump Question

        Bill,

It's my understanding the fuel pump, fuel pump bolts and the plate under were not on the engine and these parts were assembled to the engine at St Louis.

The fuel pump attachment bolts are not correct for 67, they look correct for the 66 earlier cars though.

Thanks Tim, Enzo and Keith ---

          Your input makes sense ---

I looked closely at the bolts and they are recessed hex head per the judging manual --- but there is no indication of head marks in the manual-- the ones on the car are "E" head marks.

Interesting about the comments that they look like they are from 66 -- the car is really early with a December 5th, 1966 build date. I am not sure if that has / had any bering on the fuel pump bolts. However, there are many other "66 like" touches on this car.

          Thanks!!!

Hi Bill, the JM does sat that the mounting bolts are 7/16 flanged head and integral lock or split washer. Check that and if it checks out you are good to go... Good luck

              Bill,

I want to add with regard to the fuel pump bolts my 67 is a Sept 23, 66 build and the fuel pump bolts are not like the 66/earlier design. I believe the judging manual is not correct here but maybe someone else will chime in.

The correct 1967 fuel pump bolts have a 9/16 (flat to flat) size head with attached lock washer. Double check the archives, there probably is some info there.

Yes, the 1967-71 small block fuel pump bolts were 3/8-16 X 1-1/2", 9/16 across-the-flats. They were phosphate-finished with a captured split lockwasher and were untrimmed head style (i.e. "indented head"). Keep in mind that one does not have to use bolts with a captured lockwasher. The captured lockwasher is an assembly line convenience. If one uses a standard, untrimmed head 3/8-16 X 1-1/2" bolt with a separate lockwasher, no one will ever know the difference.
