Any tips for adhering vinyl trim to interior quarter panels?

I am having trouble getting the vinyl to adhere to the cardboard quarter panels. I use the hd 3m spray adhesive and wait until both surfaces tack up. Then, smooth the vinyl over the cardboard panel and roll the edges. I hold down the edges until dry. All looks good until a few weeks later and the edges are letting go and then the vinyl on the from side of panel will come unglued. Any tips or help? These are the original pieces and the cardboard has a bow to it and is not flat but that shouldn't pose a problem.

Contact cement, let it set up on both surfaces prior to assembling them together. You only get one shot at it so get a helper.
