    Help me find oil leak

I changed my oil in my 67 L71 coupe today. The bottom of the right lower control arm and surrounding area was wet with oil. I checked the pan, front seal, and fuel pump and all were dry and fine. I have no idea where the oil came from particularly since most was on the A arm in front of the motor.

      Check around the valve covers.

Maybe you spilled some oil during the change?

I would clean it and keep and eye on it.

The vast majority of the time these sort of leaks originate from the valve cover gaskets even though the oil may not appear to come from the valve covers.

Thank you Joe. I will have a friend with better eyes than mine look closely. I thought that was the issue but I could not see it. It is hard to think through when the oil appears on a component forward of the engine.

You might look at the fuel pump.

Do you have an automatic with transmission oil cooling lines?

Thanks all. I checked the fuel pump and that is fine, It is definitely not anti-freeze, nor is it trans oil. It was put back in the garage yesterday after the oil change. I will see if I can find anything leaking today and let you know.

                      Robert,
I would start by thoroughly cleaning the entire right side of the engine and engine compartment. That will, then, allow you to more readily see where the leak is coming from. I'm not saying that your engine or compartment are dirty, just saying any oil residue that is there will make it much harder to see where a minor leak is coming from.

Get some engine oil dye from a repair shop and use a black light to see where it's leaking at.

Baby powder or talc sprinkled around will show the leak source VERY quickly, without any special equipment.

I had this problem in the exact same location as yours (right lower control arm wet with oil) about 6 months ago and it was found to be coming from a leaking intake manifold gasket(s)...

Was very difficult to find but that was where it was coming from ('65 L79)...

                            Good Luck...

Where on the intake was it leaking? Why do you say it was so difficult to find?
