    4 spd. shifter gauge?

Ok, so I made a gauge to set my shifter in the neutral position, but I have a question. Well actual two.

First: The measurements I got to make the gauge said it should be one inch long. When I insert it into the shifter levers, it seems to only go in through he first two arms, or about 1/2". Should it not also locate the reverse lever in the neutral position?

Second question: Has anyone ever removed a shifter and linkage from a car with the transmission already in place? I tried taking it out through the front, but there are two many obstruction. Should I remover the emergency cable and pulley , to remove the shifter and mount through the rear?

On a c2 the shifter can be dropped down from the bottom with transmission in place

The 63-type shifter is different than the 65-66 shifter which mounts differently than the late-66/67 shifter, as I recall. Which one might we be talking about?

My car was built in February, 1967. Last night I tried to remove the shifter and its mount, via sliding it forward off the cross member. I had also removed the transmission mount and the plate it sits on, to gain as much room as possible. Could not get enough room to get it out! My hope was, in doing so, to be bale to put the neutral gauge in and tape it as one other poster did.

Only other things I can think of is to remove the emergency brake cable and pivot wheel. The try to slide the shifter toward the rear of the car and off the cross member.

Do you know if removing the pin that holds the chrome shifter shaft, and removing it first is advisable?

I don't think there is any problem removing the shifter on a side pipe car. Maybe you should pull the exhaust pipes and mufflers off to get the room you need. This is easy if you have stainless steel pipes, but maybe hard with rusty pipes. Actually, if the pipes are out of the way, you should be able to insert the tool and adjust the shifter arms without removing the shifter. And yes, the tool should go in far enough to pin the reverse arm as well. I would not try to remove the shift lever with the linkage in the car. It would be a nightmare trying to re-install it with the linkage in the car.

            Pat,

Thanks. My car does have the stock under body exhaust. I think you are right that if I remove the left side forward pipe, it would allow more room for my arm to get up into the area where the shifter gauge is. Sure wish I would have thought about inserting the gauge when I had the shifter out and on my work bench! Guess I thought I had everything marked well enough that it would go back together in the same position as when it came out of the car. Not easy lying on my back with the car suspended above me on jack stands!
