C-2 M21 shift linkage adjustment

I was under my car tonight, having installed the engine and transmission earlier this week, and thought I had the tranny shifter arms and linkage the same as when I took the units out of the car. However, after hooking up the linkage, the shifter inside the car seems to be too far back, as though it is in second, or fourth gear and will not shift the transmission!
Any thoughts and help getting things into the right position would be very helpful.
