    57 Oil Filter Cannister

Would someone tell me how to remove the stud from the canister? There seems to be a retainer of some sort under the washer inside the canister. Can't tell how that was configured or installed. Any info, pics would be greatly appreciated.

Greg, When I replace the copper washer and rubber gasket using the repair kit, they say to use a sharp chisel to trim the 2 ridges on the long bolt holding the cup. If you push the cup down a bit you'll see them.

In the kit they include a press-on retainer ring to hold the cup after assembly.

I just checked with Zip and they don't have a repair kit for a 57. My retainer looks more like a snap ring that was crimped in one spot than a washer. Guess I'll need to figure how to get that snap ring off.

          Greg,
Once you remove the long bolt, turn a shallow groove (in same position of the staked area) to accept a retaining ring for reassembly. A retaining ring can be assembled using the straight prong tips on the retaining ring pliers while pushing down against the spring. Do not use an E ring or snap ring as they are not captive and could dislodge. Retaining rings are obtainable from True Arc, hardware supply store, and online. I just resurfaced the soft copper washer for reuse.

Does anyone know how to get the long bolt out? There appears to be a thin band that is crimped holding the bell shaped retainer in place.

Like Gene said, the thin retainer is just a staked part of the bolt surface that holds the spring plate. I have read where a few have said to just give the threaded end of the bolt (with a misc nut on the end) a whack with a hammer and it will drive the bolt out through the plate. The pictures that I have seen seem to show where that method tears up the edge of the plate where it contacts the stakes. I recommend the shearing off stakes method by retaining the bolt head in a soft jaw vice, place a screwdriver against the stakes and tap them to shear them off. Then cut the retaining groove and add a snap ring.

if you want to message me, I have an article that covers the resto process.

My experience on a number of canisters is to hold the bolt head, reach in the canister hold and push the retainer and and turn it. The retainer will index to a point where it slips over the bump on the bolt and comes off.
                No hammer necessary.

That would be sweet, but my retainer doesn't have any slots of index points to do as you suggest. Would be nice though. Looks like I have to either press the staked piece of the bolt back up against the bolt or shear the staked piece off. Thanks for your idea.
