I also saw discussion about matching the color from an original engine. But I wonder how accurate that would be after years of heat and fading.

More accurate than whatever comes in an aerosol can!

I have a set of 1971 valve covers that were taken off a car very early and lived in boxes ever since. They're accurate, and don't look much different than the orange on my original 72. I'd match those in a second compared to using a spray bomb.

Don't forget to put some good runs in the valve covers, if originality is your goal.
