1967 Big Block Cylinder Head Paint at Aluminum Intake area

I have this query buried in another thread HERE but I'll dupe it here as maybe some haven't noticed it.

    ...........
Does the latest Edition of the JG discuss silver paint on the heads of aluminum intake engines? I need to order one of those. The 5th Edition JG on pg 99 mentions silver paint on the heads near the intake. It does not differentiate between Small or Big Block in it's statement. I believe this is in error.

I believe the earlier C1 and C2 small block engines with aluminum intakes had silver paint on the intake sides of the heads, but the Tonawanda built BB engines had orange paint next to the aluminum intakes. This excellent thread started by Mark Donnally a while ago tells me that they were orange.

    Another here....

Maybe the 4th Edition of the JG had silver notations also, as the last '67 BB I restored I used silver there, but now appears I was misinformed.

Rich..I have the latest (awesome) JG for 61-62

Optional engines with unpainted aluminum intake manifold or FI adapter plates:

ends show evidence of over spray, manifold sides and mating head surfaces are unpainted

      Jerry,

I have the new 61/62 JG but hadn't checked it out yet. My '59 2x4 270 has no paint.....but then again I don't think I knew any better 20 years ago when I rebuilt it. Couldn't recall if the C1's did or not.

      Thanks for that info.

Latest JG notations that a fellow member sent me....Not totally specific about orange paint coverage on the heads, or how much, but mentions orange overspray on the edges. It does however mention that aluminum manifolds should not show evidence of aluminum paint.

Richard the latest 67 JG is in a binder not the in the plastic ring binding, that was the previous edition. I talked to someone at Carlisle that a brand new judging guide is in the works.

pg120.jpgpg99.jpg Richard, I think I found what could be confusing in the 5th Edition of the 67 JD, at least it was to me. Pg 99 under Engine color does not breakdown SB or BB. However pg 120 under Intake manifold does cover the SB and BB intake area.

              Keith -

Unless there's been a recent second printing of the 5th Edition that I'm not aware of, that '67 TM&JG is in the same plastic coil binding as all of the other "new" JG's.

Your right John for some reason I was thinking of the old 4th edition.

Yes that's it Jim, I was only looking at page 99. Thanks.

Thanks John, I was about to buy a new one at the NCRS store but 5th is the latest.
