I am getting ready to put my steering column in and the J.M. states the first 6 inches awa the hub should be painted the same color as the interior color. My interior color is dark blue. My entire column and hub are low gloss black and the 2 previous original owners said they never painted it. Anyone else have a dark blue interior with the same ?? thanks

Re: early 63 steering column
Robert, Bob is correct, but as the JM states about 6" inches of the tube was interior color and the rest was black.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: early 63 steering column
Robert,
Corvette America sell spray can dye which can be used on metal also. I've used it with good results on vinyl, fiberglass, and metal. HERE
You could also get lacquer from TCP Global...but smallest they sell is a quart.
Interior is 12740 Flat:

Re: early 63 steering column
In 63 interior metal was sprayed with lacquer, interior non-metal was sprayed with dye.
This is from my 63 just prior to installation.Attached Files

Re: early 63 steering column
I simply told them the year and color and they already had the formula. The mixed both the lacquer and dye and put it in rattle cans. As I recall about $22.00 per can.

Re: early 63 steering column
As an interesting little tidbit, we had a very early 64 in our shop some time ago. If I recall, the vin was #086. It had a 64 steering column in the car, and was painted like a 63 in red to match the interior! I have had MANY original 63 columns in my hands before, and am very familiar with the appearance of a factory painted steering column. There is not one bit of doubt in my mind that the car came that way!- Top
