    1973 L82 Distributor Cap

Just beginning my search for a gently used or NOS distributor cap for my '73 L82. Not much in the '73 AIM (that I could find), only a reference to the dist assy being installed at the engine assembly plant. The '73 Judging Manual calls out a "black, Delco Remy brand" with a note that there is "a" patent number on the top of the cap.

In my search I have come up with reference to D308R, a possible part number of 1971244 and a possible patent number of 2769047. Before I buy, I would like to know if anyone can confirm these #'s are correct for my '73 or point me in the right direction of the correct numbers.

    Thanks !!
    John

    Re: 1973 L82 Distributor Cap

    Hi John,
I believe the correct part number for the L82/250HP with a 4speed is 1112130. And for the L82/250HP with an automatic is 1112150. Hope this helps. OOPS SORRY JOHN, THESE NUMBERS ARE FOR THE DISTRIBUTOR NOT THE CAP, MY ERROR. I'm sure someone will chime in with the correct numbers. In the meantime I'll keep looking and get back to you.. sorry!

The Delco D308R, aka GM #1971244, is the correct distributor cap for your application. Any distributor cap with these numbers will be FUNCTIONALLY correct for your application. However, not all caps of these part numbers will be CONFIGURATIONALLY correct for your application.

For the past 25+ years, Delco distributor caps of the above-referenced part numbers have been "no-name". In other words, there was no script or embossing on the top of the cap. The CONFIGURATIONALLY correct cap for your application is black plastic with the Delco-Remy script, the patent number you mentioned, and an "R" embossed on the top of the cap.

        Re: 1973 L82 Distributor Cap

Joe - thank you very much for the clear and concise answer confirming the information I had dug up. I now feel much better about spending way too much money for a 42 yr. old distributor cap !! At least now I know that I'll be spending it on the right part and that's what it's all about.

Jimmy - thank you also for confirming the distributor numbers. Those were the numbers listed in my old 2001 Black Book I had along when I purchased the car last year. The current Judging Manual doesn't exactly agree with us right now, but that's a subject for another day, take care !!

Thanks again to both of you,
        John

          Re: 1973 L82 Distributor Cap

          Hi Joe,
I too am looking to replace my distributor cap on my 73 L48. So, then I am to concentrate on finding a cap that has 2769047 R Delco-Remi Patent Pending embossed on the top, and not the one that is listed as D308R #1971244? Better yet could you please explain "configurationally vs. functionally correct" in more detail for me.(not mechanically inclined).

Means that it functions perfectly but would probably take some originality deductions in judging.

The cap you are looking for should have this script on the top side that reads.

Delco-Remy Patent 2769047 with a small "R" what I mean by small "R" as that its height is similar to the lower case letters in the delco-remy script. There are caps with a much larger "R" that were produced. Also be aware some caps have a shorter patent number only 6 digits those are not correct for your application. Here are some photos

Paul - thanks for your reply and the photos. Looks like I've got the correct one on the way, I'll know more next week when it arrives. Interesting comment about the six digit patent, spotted one of those for sale and thought it was a misprint in the listing. Glad that's not the one I bought.

                Thanks again.
