    62 Brake & clutch pedals

Does anyone have or know where I can get a good picture of the pedal assembly? That particular page is missing from my illustrated parts book and the one in the ST-12 is not very good. I'm trying to determine why I have sideways movement. Also does anyone have the dimensions of the rubber clutch pedal stop?
    Thanks
    Terry

    Terry,
do you have a copy of the AIM(assembly manual). If not you can buy a copy from Corvette Central. Also in the Noland Adams
book Vol. 1, it shows drawings of the clutch and brake assembly in some detail. As far as sideways movement is concerned, that my be due to a worn main pedal shaft or the anchor points of each pedal unit. Both pedals swing on the same shaft. Good luck
C-1's are fun to work on. Very therapeutic!

I have the AIM, Nolands book and just about every other book about 62's but none show a very detailed picture of what I want. And as luck would have it my copy of the Illustrated parts book is missing that page, so if someone could e-mail me a copy of that page I would be very grateful!

I haven't had my '61 clutch ass'y out but have done so on my '63 for a 'sideways movement' problem. A common problem with C2s is the clutch weld letting go at the top at the crosshaft...pic attached.. I don't know if C1s are the same..

          Terry,
The drawings in the AIM and ST-12 are about as good as I have seen. I just took my clutch and brake pedal assembly on my `62 apart this weekend to clean, paint, and replace the bushings. It is a fairly straightforward job, but made much easier by removing the driver's seat from the car. You have block the clutch linkage in a partially depressed condition so that you can disconnect the clutch rod from on the clutch pedal assembly. Once that is done, there is a cotter pin and a flat washer on the passenger side end of the clutch pedal assembly that must be removed, after which you can slide that assembly toward the driver's side of the car and remove it. Next, you need to remove the bolt that secures the shaft that the brake pedal assembly pivots on, and also disconnect the brake pedal from the master cylinder plunger. You should them be able to remove the shaft assembly, which will then let the brake pedal be removed by rotating it about 90 degrees and pulling it down. There are four nylon bushings in the assembly, two that fit inside the upper end of the brake pedal, and two that fit inside either end of the shaft that the brake pedal pivots on. I suspect you will find that some of those bushings are worn out, allowing for the play you have noted, unless there is some other damage. I also replaced the clutch pedal bumper, which is about 3/4" tall when inserted into the bracket that holds it. Hope this helps.
          Mike

Terry - My '61 Corvette has had a lot of mods done to it over the years and when I replaced the plastic pedal bushings I still noticed a fair amount of play and, surprisingly, it wasn't due to the pedal arm coming loose from the cross shaft. I found that after everything was put back in place as it should be there was still a lot more play in the pedal and to correct that I wound up replacing the flat washer that Mike Ingham mentions with a thicker washer to take up that play. Was the existing washer thinner than the stock washer? No way to answer that since there's been a lot of years since my 61 was factory fresh and no doubt a lot of hands in there doing repairs. I can say that after using a thicker flat washer, there was much less slop noticed in the pedal but still adequate play to allow free movement of that pedal.

Terry when I get out to the shop I'll email that page to you. Anything in particular you need a picture of? I have one apart for the '61 if you need any more close-ups, and a '59 easily accessible for any pictures once installed.

Here's the '61 on the bench....

Stellar photography as always Rich. That setup even has a metal housed brake light switch instead of one of those crappy plastic-encased repros !

Thanks.....That's for the '61 I have here. I found a original brake light switch in the piles of stuff that came in with the car. It didn't work, but it does now, after I took it apart and cleaned the contacts. I love saving those original switches. So many got tossed years ago.

Like the Park Brake Switch I got from you a while ago. Works great.

I shot a few pics of the AIM just now before your reply.....for future reference for your next C1 in case you forget again.
