    Radiator over flow tank

What do you use to clean the inside crud off the inside? Is there a chemical made? What cleaning procedure will not effect the plastic? color?

You mention plastic, so I assume you have a '73 or newer with a coolant recovery tank. After removing it, fill with Dawn and hot water and let it soak. For stubborn spots, try reaching them with a bottle brush. If still stained, fill and soak with white vinegar over night. For even more stubborn stains, soak with a few ounces of automatic dishwasher detergent and hot water. For yellowed plastic, diluted bleach sometimes helps.

Thanks! Tried radiator flush with hot water and let sit over night. This did not work. Brushed the insides also . I will try vinegar

Try a citric acid solution, letting it soak for several hours and then rinse thoroughly. Follow this with an alkaline solution made by adding a few teaspoons of lye to enough water to fill the tank. Neither of these will harm the plastic. These tanks are made of linear polypropylene which is pretty much impervious to acids and bases.

One thing, though: if the tank is YELLOWED, as it most likely is, you're never going to be able to remove much of that. In other words, you can never return it to its original, as-new state.

The crud is attached to the inside of the plastic. I will try lye and water. Thanks!

I used ceramic pyramid media from a tumbler to clean the crud from the overflow tank on my son's 96. The tank was removed and filled with a couple of handfuls of media and some water to make a slurry. (Do NOT completely fill with water - you want the media to be able to slosh around.). Shake vigorously and let the media work. A bottle brush was necessary to get to a few spots. We did not use soap as it would quickly foam up and limit the action of the media.

that did not damage the colant sensor on the bottom of the tank

I will try the media. Is this like pool sand?

What I cleaned was the white translucent overflow tank, NOT the black surge tank on the 1996. There is no coolant sensor in the white translucent overflow tank.

Not sure why I thought of that tank and not the other.

NOT pool sand. The tumbler media is hard ceramic pyramids about 1/4" on a side. Here is a link to what I used:
