    DB Radials for C2

    HI:

There have been several posts off and on over the last year or so regarding radials for C2 cars. I thought it might be fun to share the results of my research and eventual purchase of Diamond Back radials for my recently acquired '67 coupe.

I bought 205 75/15 tires (Toyo) from Diamond Back. I specified the exact white wall width and placement on the tire from an original bias ply Non DOT spare that I have. Clearly not jugeable but a nice set of beautiful road tires on restored rally wheels --- bias plys on the way for judging --- later. If you are not aware, Diamond Back completely cleans "ALL" brand name, size and DOT information off of one side of the tire and then bonds a white wall (or red wall) to the tire to meet your exact specifications.

The tires turned out pretty nice ---- the photos are below --- (please excuse the rear view photo -- still under some minor restoration at this point but looking pretty good overall I think ---)

Hope this gives you some ideas for a nice set of road / driver tires.

    Regards
    Bill

It does look good for sure, the ever so rare small block 1967 Corvette Coupe. I see Uniroyal now makes a couple of Tiger Paw radials available in white walls in sizes that should work on Mid-Years. Since US Royal was I think was an OEM supplier are those judgeable?

Sure they are judge-able, but you will not like your deducts for being a modern radial and having DOT markings.

I love the red line tires DB did for me, they are on my '64 now that I sold my red '67. DB does great work.

On a related front, I've been looking for a "BIAS PLY-LOOK RADIAL" that would be appropriate for a C2. As many know, a radial tire that has the appearance of a bias ply -- including pie-crust edge, zig-zag tread pattern, narrow tread footprint -- has been available now from at least manufacturer for a couple of years. This tire thus apparently "looks" like a traditional bias ply, but has the internal constuction of a radial. However, to my knowledge, this new tire is so far available only in a blackwall or WIDE whitewall such as would be appropriate for a C1. I'm not aware of the availability of this "bias ply-look radial" in a narrow whitewall configuration as would be suitable for a C2. I'm surprised this developement hasn't generated more discussion on these discussion boards. Is anyone here aware of any new, forthcoming developments concerning a narrow whitewall version of this tire? Thanks.

I have not heard of that, but I would not be interested in it. To me the only reason to have a tire that looks like the old fashioned OEM bias ply for a C2 is for judging. If it is radial, it will not judge well, and I prefer a wider, more aggressive tread, huskier sidewall tire for the road on a C2, modern radials just look and perform far better, especially mounted on American Mag Torq-Thrust Ds. But that is just me.

              Michael,

Are these Coker the ones you are talking about. They do indeed look like bias ply.

Has anyone any experience with Universal Vintage Tire? They have a 205/7R75 BFGoodrich redline that looks good. Be interested in the point deduction using this tire.
                    Thanks, Phil

Mike, Yes the Coker wide whitewall radial with the "bias look" is the tire that I was referring to. Curious to me that no one (apparently) has come out yet with a narrow whitewall version of same. Yes, it'd really be for those of us who want a better handling tire that would also still be suitable for judging.

                        HI:

Interesting concept (radial tire that appears as a bias ply) --- kind of neat really ---

My guess is it would still not be accepted for the PV aspect of the Duntov / McClellan awards ----
