67 engine will not turn over/start

Went out this morning and attempted to start my car, but nothing, no click, just silence, nothing. the clock and dome light works.

Then went back 30 minutes later and it started right up several times.

Any ideas on what I should be checking.

    many thanks

Look at connections on the battery and starter. ground cable also from battery to block.

      Neutral Safety Switch?

There is no neutral safety switch on a manual transmission for 67 (probably should be), just a back up light switch. As Ed suggested, a poor ground could be intermittent and cause a problem. That would be a good place to start.

In addition to the above I would look at the starter solenoid and the ignition switch. If it's either of those it will rise up again it's ugly head to bite you when you need the Corvette the most.

Years ago, my 66 did the same thing - exactly. It turned out to be the battery cable was lose because I failed to tighten it adequately after re installation .

              Dwayne:

(In addition to the other members suggestions ----)

Check the two main wiring harness plugs that go into the firewall just below the driver side hood receiver. Photo below from my '67 coupe.

The contacts can get corroded over time and if contact is not positive / very good --- you will get a "lights out" dead car condition ---- Carefully remove both plugs and inspect them for corrosion...Both at the plug and at the fire wall. Clean them with some contact cleaner (Radio Shack used to sell it) --- you should be able to find it at an auto parts or electrical contractor store.

This happened on my '66 once and the car just turned up "dead on arrival" --- pulled the two connectors (original) and cleaned both the contacts --- I never had a problem after that.

              Hope this helps...

              Regards
              Bill

                Dwayne,

I have had the same problem occasionally with my battery cut-off switch, the screw on type.

Hmm, as soon as i read that i remembered that i had a green knob screw type battery cutoff that gave me fits. I replaced it with a quality blade type and now have the same on my 1972. The blade type has been 100% trouble free.
