Assembly of rubber insulator on steering column escutcheon

I am trying to understand how this insulator and spring clip are supposed to be installed on the escutcheon and column assembly. The 1965 AIM (9-5 is not very helpful)

The rubber insulator itself has a semi-circular cross section. Does the rounded surface face the instrument cluster with the flat side face the escutcheon? How is the spring clip supposed to retain the insulator? I see two slots cut into each side of the escutcheon. I suspect that the retainer somehow uses these slots but I don't see how to place the retainer in those slots such that the insulator is held in place.

Thanks in advance for any help

    Jim,

As they say one picture is worth a thousand words. Here's a couple with the gasket installed.

PS. And yes you will have to remove the steering column to insert the gasket.

Jim, just ensure you get the rubber and clip for a 65. The rubber and clip for a 63, as usual, will not fit and make you crazy trying to install it.

        Hi Joe
Thanks for this response. Very helpful. Does the rounded side side of the insulator fit into the escutcheon or the flat side? Cant quit tell in your photo. With the escutcheon loosened from the instrument cluster panel, i was able to fit the insulator into the escutcheon (round side in to the escutcheon so flat side rests against the column ) and then work the escutcheon down the column into position. I did not have to remove the column. I did not try to install the retainer clip as it seemed to be a pretty snug fit in there and would only tend to work itself out if/when I pull the escutcheon back up the column.

            Jim,

The flat side goes into the escutcheon with and the rounded side goes against the column tube. And after thinking about it, you really don't have to remove the column. Just side the escutcheon forward after taking out the screws in the bottom. I think you can slide the rubber gasket in and snap the ring in as it just secures the rubber gasket into the escutcheon.
