Mid Year Side Exhaust Hardware Question

Is the proper screw that holds side exhaust cover to bracket in lower rear of the cover on 66 a straight slot screw as the 66 judging manual states or is it a phillips head screw that all of the vendors sell for that application?
    Thanks
    John

I have found it to be very hit/miss with what the usual vendors sell vs what the judging guide indicates. In the case of side exhaust covers, I follow the NCRS guidelines, which are also in the 67 judging guide as "chrome plated flat head countersunk slotted screws." My side exhaust covers were judged as correct recently although "your mileage may vary"

65 owners have different judging requirements, at least as described in the 5th edition (may change when the 6th ed. comes out soon ?)

quote: "A black-phosphate plated bracket secured with a chrome plated countersunk Phillips screw attaches the cover at the rear."
They could have added curved head screw (or whatever the technical descriptive is; ie. not flat).

My car had N14 added in 1983; the then owner was definitely not the NCRS type [eg. didn't go to the trouble of removing the rocker panel hangers ].

Were covers and other hardware still available from the general back then ? I know the exhaust pipes were.

Do you know where I can get some straight slot screws?
        Thanks

Hi John, I looked everywhere and no "usual vendor" had these. I found they are 10-24 x 3/4" screws and the closest I could find were actually faucet handle screws! My local hardware stores did not have these chrome plated but some of the faucet sets included them. Rather than buy a faucet for my Corvette ( ! ) checked online and found here http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ilpage_o01_s00 they are available in bags of 5 for 3 bucks. Seems wrong somehow to not pay the usual Corvette tax... They are not very stout, I tightened one a little vigorously and the slot metal deformed. Here is how they look on my car. If you find a better source, let me know

Not exactly the same screw as discussed above, however I thought my photo might fit here (instead of starting a new discussion).

LICS sells a black screw like the one in the photo, which has the next size smaller head (could be a #6 head?). The vendor that sold me this chrome plated screw does not offer the black oxide versions.

LICS and the other vendor's screw length is not long enough for the "double layer" of fiberglass in the rear... of a '67 coupe.

I may be wrong, but I am thinking it is a #6 screw with a # 4 head. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

From what I have found, it is a very unique screw. I don't have the specs handy, but Long Island has the correct screw. Once you install one of theirs, and look at others you will see the difference. The correct screw has a rounded head, but sits very flush compared with others available. I searched all over Detroit for a match to the one I had, and no one had it.

That looks like what I remember, yes. You'll see all sorts of screws sticking out further at meets and shows.
