    67 AC Condensor

I'm in the process of restoring the AC in my 67. Actually, upgrading it to the 134 refrigerant. I have the condenser out of the car and today removed the original drier. Should the replacement drier be painted semi-gloss black, or left as clean aluminum? Also, there appears to be a tube that goes from the drier to the bottom of the Condenser. I see it as a replacement part in catalogs, so I'm wondering, is this a press in fit part with seals around the tube where it goes into the Condenser?

William, I can't answer the 67 question as I have a 63 with A/C. I am returning to R12 as the 134 just didn't perform as well. It never really got cold. Flush all the lines as well as the evaporator and the condenser. You should not flush the expansion valve, dryer or compressor..

I'll stop here and ask why you are changing from R12?

        Re: 67 AC Condensor

        Hi Harry,

The reason I'm converting is the extremely high cost and availability of R-12 refrigerant. I live in a state that has the same environmental rules as California! The politicians have tried to enact a, "crusher law", for any car older than 25 years. Fortunately, enough people have argued against that law and it has been tabled for now!
My car is not a high option car, having only the AC and 350 HP/ 327. I don't have the resources to do a frame off, so just having a road car with working accessories is what is important to me at this time.
I do understand, having read some threads about the conversion process, I may not have an air flow that is as cold as the R -12 was. At least I live in the northeast, in area that does not have extreme high temperatures and humidity.
This car was a Florida car, purchased used when I lived down there. The AC was not working when I bought it, and I did have the system recharged. It worked for a while, but the hoses leaked and the system lost all of it's Freon. Also, being a roadster, the AC system would ice up after about 20 minutes in the Florida humidity. It was kind of like having a screen door in a submarine!

          WG,

As you say R12 is more expensive than 134. But there is still plenty of it around. You can take an open book online test and become a licensed R12 installer, buyer or seller.-----> http://www.epatest.com/609/openbook/

One of the reasons a system will freeze-up is that the expansion valve fails and stays stuck open. If it fails in the opposite direction meaning it fails stuck closed you do not get enough Freon through the evaporator thus no cold air. (this was my problem) Use all new green O-rings.

          Good luck.

            Harry,

Maybe you know the answer to this. There is a tube that runs from the Drier to the bottom of the Condenser. I see in the catalogs, this tube is offered as replaceable. I've looked at mine and I don't see where it "screws" into the fitting on the core. Do you know if it presses into the condenser, and if so, are there O ring seals that need to be replaced on the condenser end of the tube?

              William ,

There should not be any detachable tube between your condenser and the drier , your 67 condenser should look like the top picture , and the drier is attached directly to it

The second condenser is from a 63 to 65 , and while it does have a detachable tube that goes between it and the drier ,( I think) , it still does not connect directly to the condenser , but rather to a fitting on the tube already welded to the condenser .

Is this what your asking about , or have I missed it ?

                Jim,

Mine is exactly like the one in the top picture. I fully suspected the tube was not removable. Thanks for letting me know the drier is painted black. My car is an unrestored 48 year old survivor. I've owned it since 1975 and could not remember if the original drier had been painted by me, or someone else, had it come from the factory black! Guess I did not paint it, but I will paint the new replacement!
