Where to Buy a Quality Volatage Regulator for the '61?

My voltage regulator burned out on the '61. Is there a good local parts store to get a quality replacement, such as Napa etc?

    Thanks!

I expect that any new regulator you buy today is going to be manufactured by Standard Motor Products. However, I don't know that all the ones they manufacture and sell under different brands are the same. So, if it were me, I'd go with the following:

    30 amp (all except FI)-----GM #1119003, aka Delco D618

    40 amp (all with FI)-------GM #89058259, aka Delco C632

Delco is hard to find and expensive. Do I have to polarize the system after replacement?

Any Delco dealer should be able to get you the Delco regulator. About 70 bucks for the 30 amp and about 85 bucks for the 40 amp. The Standard Motor Products units should be more easily available but they don't really cost that much less. The 30 amp is VR-20 and the 35 amp is VR-30. Standard also makes much cheaper regulators under different part numbers. I wouldn't use them, at all.

I don't know if you need to polarize, or not. It's been a WAY LONG TIME since I got involved with a car with a mechanical regulator.

Where can I find a Delco regulator for $70.00? Be happy to buy one.

Try it first. If it doesn't charge, polarize it. I've replaced/rebuilt generators and replaced VR's and have never had to polarize anything but it's a simple task if needed.

Yup. Rock Auto is a good source:

                Delco D-618 (30 amp) -----$63.89

                Delco C-632 (40 amp)-------$88.79

Since I believe the regulator failed and the points stuck after a high rev, would I be better off with a 40 amp regulator or the 30 amp, or would it not make a big difference?

I'd be surprised if the regulator inside a "Delco" box isn't just another SMP manufactured part like points, rotors, caps, etc. GM hasn't manufactured these parts since the early nineties when they spun most Delco manufacturing off into Delphi. They also sold the name "Delco-Remy" and whoever bought it sold remanufactured starters, alternators, etc. for awhile, but I don't think they succeeded and are not around anymore.

Most likely, the Delco regulator is manufactured by Standard Motor Products as I previously mentioned. However, there's not that big of a price difference between the high quality SMP regulator and the Delco.

The Delco-Remy trademark was ultimately spun off to a company called Remy International. I believe they have the license to use the Delco-Remy trademark for some period of time. Thereafter, their product will be known simply as Remy to which they have "everlasting" rights. Remy International is very much still in business and their primary product lines are heavy duty starters and alternators, mostly for trucks and other HD applications.

GM retains the exclusive right to market parts under the AC Delco and Delco brand names.
