Re: Welcome C4 and C5 Enthusiasts!

After my first 6 years or so with NCRS doing C2s, which I could never afford when in high school and college when they were new (as they shot up in price I only could get them when I retired), but always wanted, I am taking a new, different approach to my next car. My first new Corvette was an '81. They too are dirt cheap and have the style I like, as a C3. Challenges can come in all forms to have fun in NCRS, and six figure cars are not the only way to go.

      On TV, I just watched Barrett-Jackson auction a 1989 convertible for $20,000.
      - 6,500 miles
      - Benchmark, Survivor, Gold Awards
      - Original owner with owner's kit and window sticker
      - Auxiliary Hardtop
      - 6 speed (1st year!)
      - Dark Red Metallic/ Black Leather Sport Seats

Looked beautiful. According to Black Book, there were only 4,113 6 speeds and 1,673 Auxiliary Hardtops that year.

A hard decision, but if I had to choose how to spend $20k, I'd probably get Mike's ZR-1 with 11k miles.

C4 Corvettes are great buys and run well. I had a black on graphite 85 car had 216K miles wish I would have had it judged. Was 95% original and matching and you could drive it anywhere. Sold it and bought C5. Should have kept it. had 3K invested in it.

I am the original owner of a 1986 Coupe. It received a Regional Top Flight in 2004. I had to do some extensive cleaning and replacement of a few parts to get it there. I will have to admit that it is more difficult to maintain than my two C1s, but still a joy to drive.100_0043.jpg

The C-4 was a monumental improvement over the later versions of the C-3 cars from a creature comfort and performance standpoint. I owned a new '84 and a new'85, still have an '89. Performance overall was astonishing when compared to the preceding era. The C-4 set the stage for Corvette returning to actual world class performance.

Mark, this is a great effort on your part. Here is my story. In 1999 I restored, to Duntov Mark of Excellence level, a 1957 270 which award I received in 2006 at San Antonio, Texas. This effort caused me to fill two bucket list efforts. I decided to become a judge which I have attained. Second, I decided to make an effort to secure the two remaining Mark of Excellence awards, Hill and McLellan. I found a 1993 Ruby ZR1 that received the Hill award in 2011 and a Cross Flag in 2012. I sold the 57 in 2009 and the Ruby in 2014. I was looking for a C-4 that would fall into the period for the McLellan award. I was led to a friend, a major C-1 and C-2 restorer, who had purchased a 1990 Silver Blue, 6 speed convertible. A friend and I went to his shop and found a 45,000 mile, beautiful C-4, judged the car to include a mock PV. It has taken me 2 years and 3 PV's to succeed in receiving the McLellan award in Denver this year. The National 90-97 Team Leader certified the car for presentation to the National in 2017, and guess where, San Antonio, Texas. My efforts and bucket list items have come true. My two C-4's one a ZR-1 the other an L-98, six speeds both, have been a joy to drive. A side note, if the good lord willing, I plan on locating a 2007 C-5, ZO6 to attempt to acquire the Mark of Excellence in the name of the present Chief Engineer.

Ed, I had the pleasure of meeting you at Denver. First, How is your wife doing? Secondly We both received Mark of Excellence awards and you are the first person to achieve three different ones. Your speech at the banquet was unique and you deserve the best. Thanks for the tip on putting the air filter back together much easier.

Paul, I was glad I could help, you have a beautiful Corvette. My wife is doing a lot better. She got rid of the walker and now uses a cane.
"WHAT A COUNTRY"!!! I am leaving tomorrow for Lake Tahoe to judge some more old Corvette's, oh well somebody has to sacrifice.
