    Shifter pin C-clip

In disassembling a 67 4-speed shifter the large (about 3/4'') c-clip that retains the pin holding the shifter plates went flying across the building and is now lost. It is GM part 3841725 in section 4.027. It is not listed in the Paragon catalog. Does anyone know a source? Is this standard hardware available outside the auto trade?

Patrick - It's been a few years since I had the 4-speed shifter torn down in my midyear Coupes but I seem to recall that clip is an 'E'-clip. Maybe a long shot but that should be relatively easy to find locally, maybe even Harbor Freight. http://www.harborfreight.com/catalog...result?q=clips

Thanks guys. I think E-clip is a better word for it.

It measures 1/2" ID for the 1/2" diameter groove in the shaft which is about 5/8 OD. I have a couple of extras here if you can't get one send me a PM with your addr and I can drop it in a envelope tomorrow. I think I found them when I swept up from the last time I lost one.

Great! I hate it when things go flyin' around the shop.

A retaining ring would be preferred to an E ring. They won't pop off, and you use a tool to install and remove.

The only thing worse is when you don't hear it land. Then you have no idea where to even start looking for it.

                    Exactly.....

A few years ago I had a '60 top tank radiator, and when I went to install the fan shroud it was real tight getting the 5/16" bolt into the top captive retainer in the side extension on the Drivers side of the rad support. The captive retainer popped out of the soft aluminum side extension and went flying. I never heard a thing. I spent a hour looking for it. Tore the shop apart. Car up and down on the lift and couldn't find it. Pulled everything off the shelves next to the lift. Boxes of rags thrown everywhere looking for it. Prayed to St Joseph. No help.

Side-note.........Finally, my wife came down to help me find it. We spent another 1/2 hour or so looking for it. No luck. She's usually really good finding lost stuff. She lost her diamond out of her wedding ring once. We tore the kitchen apart, pulled out the stove and the fridge. Broke open the vacuum bag after she just used it. No luck. Now I'm thinking, Darn, there goes those needed Corvette parts for my car, turned into a piece of million year old coal.....Rats! But, she found it! She opened the fridge door to get dinner going later. There it was, she saw a glitter reflection sitting on the bottom shelf next to the Pillsbury Crescent Rolls...........I was so happy!

So back to the missing Corvette piece.......One last time I bring the car up on the lift. I bang under the Pass Side splash shield. She said she heard something, so did I. I bang it again, no sound. What??? I could have sworn we both heard something. I look all around using mirrors and flashlights, nothing. Keep banging the shield and nothing.

I bring the car down on off the lift and after a few more minutes of hunting, there it was. Jammed in between the brake line and brake block and the frame. When I hit the splash shield earlier, it must've gone flying up and over again, but landed in a tight crevice with no noises heard.

Sorry, every time I hear a story like Patrick's it reminds me of that elusive 2 hour search for a Corvette part and a Diamond ring.
