    Patrick,

First spray/soak the shaft of the swivel with Kroil oil. Might take a while to get it too loosen up. Then use a padded fork tool (you'll have to improvise the tool - similar to a ball joint fork) to slip between the ball and the old mount. Secure the old mount in a vice. Then tap place the padded fork tool between the ball and the old mount. Then gently tap to remove the ball. Be extremely careful or you'll dent the mirror edge around the old ball. Go slow.

I guess you could always hack saw off the old base where the ball stud goes into.

Now pressing the ball stud back in without breaking the original mirror glass would be a bit tricky. I've never done that, I've always broken and replaced the glass.

Keep us posted with your progress and techniques.

    Good luck,

    Gary

I recently had my mirror redone and was quite surprised when the plater told me what he did. The glass was already broken so I ordered one from Paragon. He drilled a 1/8" hole in the opposite end of the ball and gently tapped it apart. He then filled the hole and re-plated the entire shaft and mirror housing. When I got it back I was a bit surprised that it was disassembled, but that did take long to put it back together. One thing I did check before pressing the glass back in was to make sure the housing around the ball would move freely. A little grease did the trick. I passed judging expect for the plating on the glass was not consistent with a factory one. A 1 point deduction.
