Re: midyear speaker JUDGING ?
The 1967 Judging Guide shows a picture the correct style speaker on page 26 of the interior section. Also states that when installed, the transformer is on the passenger side and that the magnetic is square. The photo shows the part # 7282156 which a 3" deep speaker and correct for mid-year cars. The 7282256 speaker is a 2 1/4" deep service replacement that is passed off as a speaker for factory air condition cars which in incorrect. All midyear Corvettes had the 3" deep 7282156 speaker regardless of air condition. The other number shown for example #466433. The last three numbers are the 33rd week of 1964. The dates are not judged but the style should be.- Top

Re: midyear speaker JUDGING ?
The interior judging team did not look at my '64 speaker. In Ops, they did listen to the speaker and tone switch changes.Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New Mexico- Top

Re: midyear speaker JUDGING ?
Enzo,
Would you be kind enough to answer a question I have regarding the judging of a speaker. I ask because the original speaker in my 64 corvette is almost useless and, in order to listen to the radio I will need to replace it. If I were to replace my original speaker with a new manufactured identical (in appearance) reproduction speaker would the new speaker result in a loss of points or would it "pass" with no point deduction. I guess I am asking if a replacement part completely (visually) resembles the original in form, shape, measurements, color, etc but it is obviously not original because of the "newness" of finish of its material (clean, no patina, etc) is there a point deduction? I am trying to get an understanding of what is acceptable and not with respect to replacement parts.
Thank youEd- Top

Re: midyear speaker JUDGING ?
My '64 was just judged at the Nationals in Denver. If you look through the Interior section in the manual (radio page 24, and controls page 27), there is no mention of the speaker, and there is no place on the judging sheet for marking a speaker down for anything (and the judges did not look down the grill or up from the sides), except as I mentioned in Ops, they do check the sound of the radio and the tonal quality from the tone control. If the sound from your speaker is not crisp and clear, with audible tone changes, it will be deducted there, but they did not look down the grill at the speaker.Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New Mexico- Top

Re: midyear speaker JUDGING ?
Maybe some mid-years have speaker visual inspection in the manual, but I also recently had my '67 chapter judged and there is nothing on the judging sheets or the manual about that, it is the same as the '64.Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New Mexico- Top

Re: midyear speaker JUDGING ?
Ed, in reference to the 67 manual on page 26 interior it says speaker installed with the transformer on the passenger side and a square magnet.... Most repro speakers have a round magnet.Enzo Colosimo

Re: midyear speaker JUDGING ?
The '64 JG has nothing like that for the "Dash Panel Area" on page 22. And again, I have to wonder where a judge puts a deduction on the judging sheet for #5 Dash Panel Area when only the speaker grill is listed along with defroster outlet trim for 4 points each originality and condition.Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New Mexico- Top

Re: midyear speaker JUDGING ?
Thanks to all for your comments and advice. Given that listening to the radio is not a terribly high priority while driving (driving and listening to the engine is) - I think I will go with Russ' recommendation - a re-cone job should improve the sound so the system is at least functional - and still original. Thanks again.
PS - any recommendations on re-coning companies / services?Ed- Top
