    1963 accelerator pedal configuration

Ran into a bit of a thorny issue on my May '63 (very original) car; it doesn't have the pedal spacer block and has the shorter (NON-spacer block) 1" cadmium screws...the AIM shows a spacer block under the pedal (via revision) and longer screws to support the change. Noland Adams C2 Tech Ref Guide doesn't delve in to the issue but the latest JG only says the pedal is secured by 1" Philip's head cadmium screws. Lots of CF folks chimed in; most do not have the blocks but one or two did and one added it.

So what's the verdict ? Are 63s supposed to have this change or not ? Perhaps only mid-to-late cars ?

C1 & C2 Corvettes - Gas Pedal on '63 - Now I feel like rich5962....a simple job turns in to a big question mark. Refurbishing some REALLY nit-picking things on the car so I order lots of correct nuts, bolts, expansion tank cap, etc. I take up the gas pedal and find there is NO wooden spacer block under it as shown in...

I think your car had the spacer.
A spacer is even listed in a 65 AIM so it isn't just a 63 feature.

      Frank,
I agree with Bob and the spacer goes under the carpet.

Any specs on the length of the long screws?

My April build 63 had an old spacer, & even though it has been through a number of owners and repainted, but never restored for judging until I got it, I reasonably believe it original to the car. Why would anyone put it in if not there originally, except for judging?
I replaced the rusty screws with those sold @ LIC 28-40 and they were correct length. Except I painted mine black as I was told in 63's they were black phos.
Had no neg comment about them @ Kansas City nationals last year.

The JG for '63 calls for 1" cad plated Philip's head screws...the longer screws (presumably to account for the spacer) are 1-1/4" long.

              Tim -

Those screws were zinc-plated (silver); if the JG says they were black, that's another error.

Well I have owned and restored the following S/N 8,XXX, 10,XXX, 14,XXX, 15,XXX and all of those cars had the spacer under the carpet under the accelerator pedal. The screws were so rusted that it could not be determined if they were cad, zinc or black phosphate. One thing is for sure and that is that they were NOT painted black.

Very interesting as my little informal survey on the CF forum came up with a bunch of 63s without the spacer; the exception were the couple of fellas that actually still had them. I put the spacer in my split window along with the longer (non-black) screws and things now agree with the AIM.

There's your definitive answer. I've owned/restored/examined many C-2's and have NEVER seen a known original that didn't have the spacer or the remnants of one. Also. never saw one with black screws.

Jim what was the spacer made off ? I see L.I. Corvettes look like a fiber type?

The spacer appears to be made of a "Masonite" type product. If you have a Jute backing on the carpet the spacer made up that dimension of jute so that the accelerator would not depress the carpet in this area, if it wasn't there. Just my $0.02......
