67 Coupe Front Main window Channel Problem

    Hi:

How is the front (inner) main window channel secured on a '67 coupe?

See the photo for an example of the issue that popped up yesterday.

Any definitive information on how to cure this is appreciated.

    Regards
    Bill

    Hey Bill,

I have had the same issue. I believe this channel is held in by "friction". I spread the channel a bit and then push back in. If it still does not stay in place, put a little 3M strip caulk behind it near the channel top to create a sticky point to help hold in in place.

The strip is held, to a degree, by the vent window weatherstrip tabs but the repros don't match the curvature of the channel so you need to get creative as above. Curve it as much as you can before securing it and then use the sealant or what ever and hold it in place with the window all the way up or tywraps or some other grip until the sealant dries. It's a pain..

The top horizontal window channel holds the top of the vertical window channel in place. The vertical channel should be installed first and then the horizontal top channel is installed against the top end of the vertical channel. This was a difficult piece to install as the aftermarket clips that hold the top channel in place were too large for the holes in the door frame on the top reproduction channel that I used. The top channel also bends fairly easily..... compared to original.
I'd use some 3M VHB (very high bond) doubled coated foam tape to hold the vertical channel in place, as your top channel has been deformed allowing the vertical channel to come out.

Ah yes, forgot about that little weak thing at the top. As you say mine just deformed and allowed the channel to pop out. I like the tape idea.

I should also mention that I did find a set of after market curved channels -- and will use them to replace the incorrect one in the photo ---

I decided to replace the top fuzzy channel as well as it is pretty much deformed from removing and installing several times in an effort to get the pieces to stay in place ---

I'll let you all know how this turns out once I get it completed.

              Thanks again...

This is the method I have seen on lots of original main channel weatherstripping installations. It appears that it was done in the field as the top w/s channel is notched on a angle in order provide a tab in the w/s channel for the existing midyear coupe door weather strip 003.jpgmidyear coupe door weather strip 006.jpgmidyear coupe door weather strip 007.jpgmidyear coupe door weather strip 008.jpgupper screw to secure it to the frame.

Re: 67 Coupe Front Main window Channel Problem

Interesting fix --- I am assuming from the photos that the top of the inner main channel is notched as in the photo --- and is simply moved up in the main frame slightly to allow the modification (tab and hole) to align with the existing hole?

I tried adding a tab made out of hardened brass with a hole in it and used the existing screw to secure it but it was just a bit too thick and caused visible misalignment.

I have also seen two holes drilled through the inner channel and the main channel and a flat head machine screw inserted to hold the channel in place. This seems to work but if the screw is too long it deforms the weatherstrip on the other side.... if it is not fully seated it causes the window to hit it on the way up (NOT good!!)....

I like this idea a lot better ----

                  Tanks!!

                    Hi Bill,
The main channel is on the left in the last 3 photos. I believe this was done at St. Louis or maybe AO SMITH when I stated "done in the field". I have seen this on a lot of original cars unrestored There are also two 1/8 inch tubular rivets that hold weatherstrip into the channel further down. One is about 1 inch below the right angle bracket for the vent window and the last one is about 1 inch out from the bottom. If you need anymore photos, let me know as this is a project I am presently working on.
