    Engine code on 1960

Can someone tell me where a block may have come from on a '60 Vette (approximately 4400 last 4 of VIN) that has no suffix and no derivative VIN stamping on the assembly identification stamping on the pad? There is a 4 digit number preceded by F (Flint built with date code). It's a 230hp base motor and according to the judging guide as I read it, there should be a CQ suffix for the 230 horse manual transmission.
    Thanks

My guess would be a restamper who knew there was supposed to have an assembly date but didn't know about suffix codes. What's the casting # and casting date?

I don't have access to the car at this time and just took a quick look at the pad. Leaving for Nationals tomorrow and will check further when I return. Have a neighbor who just bought the car. Thanks for your input and will advise with further details after Nationals.

That sounds about right. The pad should be stamped FXXXXCU as well as having the VIN (104400) stamped free hand (no gang holder) in the same size font as the assembly code.
I recently looked at a 60 with a VIN earlier this one. The owner was adamant it was the original "numbers matching" engine. His VIN was gang stamped in the smaller font and when I explained that they didn't start using a gang holder for another 2000+ cars he finally fessed up that it was a restamp and was really pizzed off when he found out he had paid to have it done wrong.
