    P headmark bolts

Were bolts with a simple P headmark used on Corvettes? I don't recall seeing many (any?) references to P headmark bolts in my 66 & 68 TIM&JG's, but I do have some of these bolts in my stash of fasteners.

I assume the P identifies the manufacturer. Is it known what company that would have been?

I don't know for sure, but I suspect Phoel Manufacturing in Chicago/Cicero IL. I used to inspect their electrical facilities in my youth. As far as I know they went out of business in the early 1970s. At least they went out of business at their location on Roosevelt Rd & Central Ave.

I found several cad bolts with a simple P on my 1953 Chevy 5 window pickup truck, so they were in use by Chevy long before 68-69. Although I've never seen a P head mark on a C2.

        Thank you, Terry.
I will up-date my list of fastener manufacturers accordingly and look upon my P bolts now with far less suspicion.

          Tony:

On my 66, the two bolts holding the licence plate bracket to the center crossbar are grade 5 P bolts. At the moment, I am not certain of their length.

The AIM calls these bolts out as being GM#180018. I can find no specifications for these bolts using that number.

            Henry,

IIRC I previously posted the 1964 Industrial Fastener Institute logos. This lists all the Fastener marks that are trademarked with and listed with the IFI in 1964.

Per that document, the plain P logo belonged to Prestole Fasteners. You can Google Prestole Fasteners and there's a zillion hits.

              Thank you for the clarification.

I can't believe I missed your post but my mind isn't what it once was.

                    Hi Henry,

I find multiple references to that part number, one being Paragon, the other being the AMK product catelog. Both list this as a Grade 5 bolt with "TR" head markings. Paragon lists this for a Front License Plate Bracket Bolt for '63-'67.

Boy P headmarking bolts were found through out. Just a sample, 69 grill support bolts, 63-7 License bolts, Various engine brackets 7/16" hex VC bolts. Thermostat housing, I can go on and on but the key is to find the original style font used!!!

Thanks, Peter. I had checked out the AMK Products information to confirm the GM #180018 bolt size.

That's comforting information, Rich. I was worried that I may have nothing more in my stash than hardware store bolts. Now I don't think so.

If memory servers correctly , weren't P bolts also used on some 60's alternators , holding the two case halves together ?
