    Battery

I hve a 63 Vette that I bought 3 years ago with a modern battery 24-VL 650CCA and 525 rating. Now not holding a charge. Is this the correct size for my 300/327 no A/c?

    David,

Don't know what kind of battery you have there based on the information but it appears to be correct. The battery you need is a Group 24...get a 72 month Delco and you'll be happy.

And remember to put it on a battery maintainer of some kind. Sitting for long periods without running it takes a toll on any battery.

        Re: Battery

Remove one cable and place the leads of an ammeter between the post and cable. Normal leak current should not be more than about 20 milliamps, which I believe is through the alternator.

You didn't say how long the car sits, but if it sits more than a week I recommend charging the battery before you drive it or keep a battery maintainer on it.

If leak current is higher than specified above, start pulling fuses until it drops to determine the leak circuit. If leak current is normal the battery may have an internal fault.

A modern maintenance-free type battery internal energy leakage is about one percent per day if not connected, so if the battery is disconnected for a week it should have sufficient cranking power.

Thank you all. I removed the seats to replace the carpet and padding, leaving the charger unplugged for weeks. When done I thought the battery was shot since there was no charge to light the interior lights. Since charging for 4 days the battery is strong enough to start the engine.
I still will be looking into a new battery and remember to keep the charger plugged in. A lesson learned.

If you drive the darn thing you don't have to worry about keeping the battery charged! Just sayin
