    1966 427 motor

    Hi,

I'm looking at a 1966 427 car and the seller says it is a replacement block. The only information on the engine pad is an "L" in the center of the pad. I did not get to see the casting number/date in the back of the block due to dirt, etc.

Does this "L" represent a replacement block in anyone's estimation?

    Thanks

    Jerry

No, it is probably someone's initial stamped by a machine shop.

Are there any signs of factory broaching marks or could this be the original engine that was decked?

No broach marks that I could see.

Then it might be some obscure replacement engine, or might be the original that's been decked. Casting numbers and dates would be required to move forward.

Thanks for everyone's input. The seller isn't moving on a high price for a NOM project car. Maybe next time!

Not surprising. Lots of guys with midyears think they're worth a fortune. VERY SIMPLE formula for determining what a car is worth, especially a project car:

(cost to purchase a car) + (cost for YOU to get it to the condition you want) = (cost to purchase a car already at the condition you want)

Violate the above formula and you WILL be sorry.

Under the above formula, in some cases the value of the car will be so low the owner would be insulted with such an offer. In that case, the value of the car will be greater as a PARTS DONOR car than as a restoration candidate. In other words, the owner needs to part it out and sell the USED parts to get maximum value out of the car.

By the way, one thing I'll add here (not saying it's the case of the particular car that's the subject of this thread): if a car has extensive frame, chassis and birdcage corrosion, the value is so low it's not even worth talking about. In this case, I guarantee that the owner and prospective buyer, assuming it's a savvy buyer, will be so far apart on price that it's not worth even making an offer. Actually, for such a car it's foolish to even consider buying it at ANY price. For me, that price would even include FREE.

                Joe,

I totally agree with your comments. My first project car (many years ago) got away from me and I paid the price. Now, if I can't buy it right, I don't buy it! The profit is in the buy and not the sale!
