    Vacuum Tank Repair, 68 Corvette

I will be pulling the vacuum reserve tank from my 68 to repair cracks. For the main repair I plan on brasing the existing cracks. Since pulling the tank is a major job, I was thinking of coating the tank with a flexible spray on material, such as under coating, to prevent future leaks.

Has anyone tried coating a vacuum tank with success, or am I wasting my time?

    Thanks

I've welded up a couple with new metal. Grind smooth, prime and satin black so they look as new. Most guys want the repair to be transparent. Yes, given another 25 years, maybe less, they will leak again. But they were never intended to out live us. Just thin gage steel to start with.

I think I would do the weld and dress and refinish the outside for an invisible repair. You are likely to find that most of the rust perforations will be coming from the inside. To deal with that I would use the POR 15 fuel tank repair system.

It starts off with a cleaning solution that you pour in and agitate around. Rinse that out and and an acid solution goes in and removes any rust. Rinsed and neutralized and the last part is a sealing solution that is poured in and the tank rotated in all directions to completely coat the inside. This will plug any small holes and ensure that the rust does not get back at it.

The difficulty might be getting stuff in through the small tubes. You would need to be patient.

The benefit is that it will look great and last pretty much forever.

Dan, where I use to work, we used a product called Microseal http://microleak.com/ .
Real easy to use and worked great.
