    59 Ballast Resistor Question...

My 59 has a 2x4 270 HP setup. Is there a specific ballast resistor for the higher RPM engines? I couldn't find anything specific to my question in the Technical Guide and Judging Manual. I need to purchase one and want to make sure I get the correct one so I don't burn anything up (points, coil, etc). Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Re: 59 Ballast Resistor Question...

All C1 engines used the 0.3 ohm ballast, but it increased the tendency to burn points due to higher primary current. I recommend the 1.8 ohm ballast, and if the distributor is in good condition, there should be no problem achieving 6500 RPM. If not, the distributor is worn and needs to be overhauled and brought back to spec.

Both ballasts of the same era look identical (minor construction details varied over the years), so the only way to know which is which is measure resistance. There has always been talk of a "black dot" and "blue stripe" used to ID them, but it's always been my feeling that this only applied to service parts, not the original plant installed parts.

      Hi Duke.

Thanks for your recommendation on the ballast resistor. Much appreciated!
Do you happen to know where I can purchase a 1.8 ohm resistor that's up to spec as identified in the TG&JM?

      Thanks.

Check Fuelie Dave's web site; he may have one. Usually one or two for sale on e-bay.
